"US still at risk"

The following is premised on the assumption that finite resources are available to protect against attack (this may be unreasonable, given our propensity to borrow and borrow and borrow.... without end).

I suspected this discussion might devolve to tax and spend, whether deferred or otherwise. I note that my esteemed colleague Ted Kennedy advocates this approach at every opportunity, while my own platform is that we who serve in government will soon be required to make drastic cuts in federal spending to be phased over the next several generations.

Wasting resources on obviously cosmetic measures simply reduces the resources available to deal with real threats.

One inference from the resource efficiency perspective is that our political leadership ought to create a honeypot far away from America as a means to draw terrorists onto a battleground where our professional warriors can fix and destroy them instead of attempting to defend America’s myriad point targets directly. I’ll have my staff package your suggestion into a memo for Dick Cheney with full attribution, Ming sir. ;)

Sentor Enzi (R - Wyoming) already tried and failed with respect to modifying or eliminating one obviously cosmetic measure. The requirement that possessing a model rocket motor with more than 2 oz of propellant require a BATF explosives permit, and a BATF approved explosive storage magazine to store them, is clearly cosmetic, but Sen Enzi's proposal to change the requirement fell on deaf ears. Hence we have government inspectors now wasting their time and taxpayer money doing annual inspections of model rocket builders' homes.

So Excuse Me if I have no faith in the possibility of your success.

Why would that be required? It would be wise, surely. But politicians do what gets them re-elected, not what is wise.

Politicians also can appreciate the detrimental political-economic effects that massive capital outflows from this country will obtain in the event that taxes are increased on corporations and top wage earners. For example, more business will adopt the MNC model by migrating their operations to the lowest tax countries and compensating their domestic management almost exclusively with shares that are taxed at a much lower rate than salaries and bennies, and federal tax receipts will decline substantially as a result. Nor do even most of the wildly optimistic economic cheerleader types believe that we can grow our way out from underneath the enormous federal and state government deficits thus far generated. Which leaves spending cuts as the primary mechanism to address the federal deficit issue, at least that’s the position we Blutarsky-ites are advocating until the next scheduled meeting with our paid political consultants.

Terrorism is already up.

Not at the present time in the U.S. it isn’t, and I do not apologize for my insular view, but ultimately time will tell.

Sure they can. Just like any homeowner can appreciate what paying his credit card bill might do to his household - can't send the kids to the best school, can't get snazzy work clothes, can't get the top of the line computer to be more competitive while working at home etc.

So surely the best thing to do is not pay it, right?

I have zero sympathy for politicians who fear raising taxes might dissuade X, Y and Z from happening. Should have thought of that before spending the money to begin with. "Not paying bills" should not be the financial scheme we base our government's operation on.

If you want to cut taxes, then great! FIRST cut expenditures. THEN pay off the debt. THEN cut taxes. The first two are the hard part, but that's no reason to be irresponsible.

Of course, such plans won't get them elected. Promising a middle class tax cut will.

>Not at the present time in the U.S. it isn’t . . .

It is up around the world. We used to think our oceans 'insulated' us from worldwide terrorism. On 9/11 we learned that's not true any more.

What?! This has Big Government written all over it. I'll put my staff to work on the matter immediately and have my people get back in touch with your lobbyists at an appropriate time. Can you smell what I'm steppin' in?

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States is still unprepared for another inevitable terrorist attack after not doing enough...

First you bitch about the Patriot Act going too far.

Now you bitch about Bush not doing enough.

I wish you would make up your mind.

Quite simple really....DO MORE of the things that will help. DO LESS of the things that don't help but compromise our rights. Not black and white, as usual.

Can you point out where the 9/11 commission recommended the Patriot Act?

Hastily, Clinton Administration (1993-2001):

1993 World Trade Center bombing (6 killed, 1,000 injured)
1994 Jewish students attacked by terrorist on Brooklyn Bridge (1 dead)
1995 Oklahoma City bombing (168 dead)
1996 Olympics/Atlanta bombing (1 dead, 100 injured)
1997 Atlanta gay nightclub & abortion clinic bombings
1998 Bombing of the U.S. embassies in Africa/sovereign U.S. soil (224 killed, 5,000 injured)
1999 Animal Liberation Front attacks on U.S. research facilities
2000 Bombing of the USS Cole/sovereign U.S. soil (17 killed, 39 injured)

Hastily, Clinton Administration (1993-2001):

1993 World Trade Center bombing (6 killed, 1,000 injured) Al Queda
1994 Jewish students attacked by terrorist on Brooklyn Bridge (1 dead)
1995 Oklahoma City bombing (168 dead) Right Wing Whackjobs
1996 Olympics/Atlanta bombing (1 dead, 100 injured) Right Wing Whackjob..Too bad he wont be able to vote Republican anymore.
1997 Atlanta gay nightclub & abortion clinic bombings Right Wing Whackjobs.. more of the people who support our Imperious Leader now.
1998 Bombing of the U.S. embassies in Africa/sovereign U.S. soil (224 killed, 5,000 injured) Al Queda
1999 Animal Liberation Front attacks on U.S. research facilities Left Wing Whackjobs
2000 Bombing of the USS Cole/sovereign U.S. soil (17 killed, 39 injured) Al Queda

Notice the Right Wing Whackjobs are not doing terrorist stuff now since they agree with this administration and are rabid supporters of W.

Notice also all of the Al Queda attacks... Perhaps Imperious Leader should have stayed on point since they had attacked over and over. When he got into office they sat on thier hands and did absolutely nothing to stop further attacks. Perhaps if they would have gone after the people who actually attacked us we would have had a chance of actually negating the terrorist threat..

And how many people did they kill??

I think the Right Wing Whackos with a religeous agenda are far better at killing off people.( this includes Al Queda who are also Far Right and want to return humanity to the 7th century if you dont believe as they do... hmm does not sound too much different from the Religeous Wrong now does it.
