If there were uniformed positions that could put a skill set like Bill's to *as effective use* as he could doing what he's done in the private sector for DOD, then I'm right there with you. For physicians, that's a no-brainer. For other professions, however, there's a distinct, unquestionable loss of efficacy in making a high-value individual an 11-bang-bang. True. I just see a whole lot of whiners and bullshitters out there on a regular basis. Bill's obviously not one of them and I should have picked another to respond to. Not really directed at him. Besides, I wouldn't make them all 11B. I was an 18C. Glad you reconsidered. All your 11Bs would be in a bit of a pickle without their engineer-designed equipment and weapons. Imagine how many more GIs would have died if all the physicists at Los Alamos had been issued rifles and sent to Guadalcanal, Peleliu or Iwo Jima instead.... Zenister 0 #28 November 30, 2005 you forgot "already did, on the short list to return" you could subdivide it as to 'legally declared War' or not as well.... of course i've always stated we should reveal the REAL reasons why we do what we do instead of the BS political excuses bandered about daily.... if it is about future economic security at least have the balls and the integrity to admit it FROM THE START... ____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. rhino 0 #31 November 30, 2005 QuoteSame here bro. 23 years and counting. Many have done it before me, many will do it after me. I've been called up 3 times in 6 years under two presidents. Politics isn't a factor for me, when called I go and consider it an honor. I go so hopefully others won't have to. When you sign on the dotted line, war can come along with all the bennies. Many people sometimes forget that. I get a kick out of people who claim to have been fooled by a recruiter. The purpose of the military is to fight friggin' wars, that is the bottom line.........DUH........ SEMPER FI!!!

lawrocket 3 #35 December 1, 2005 Here's my viewpoint on this subject. Back when I was in the Reserves, there were plenty of people who wanted to volunteer for deployment of one form or another. Wiht one or two exceptions, these were the ones - officers and enlisted - whose civilian life hadn't been treating them very well. Living in an apartment and working in the gardening center of Home Depot or changing oil at the Jiffy Lube. That kind of thing. For these troops, deployment was an opportunity for them to make some good pay and get some much needed excitement. It also allowed them to leave the world that had been less than wonderful behind. No need to worry about hating your boss and that stupid job at Kinkos. Plus, they have more money in their pocket when they get back. My wife is hotter than your wife. Rainbo 0 #36 December 1, 2005 It was 1976 when I raised my hand and took the oath. Not a real popular thing to do at that point in time. The only thing I got from the general public at that time was grief and name calling. I did not do for God, but I did do it because I felt I owed something to the country that has given me more opportunities to be what I am today and would not have had the to be in so many other places. Sounded silly to a lot of people then and some today, but it is how I felt then and still do today.Rainbo TheSpeedTriple - Speed is everything "Blessed are those who can give without remembering, and take without forgetting."
