Would you ever burn any country's flag?

Recommended Posts

You replied to my thoughts with a civil tongue in you head, i appreciate that more than you'll ever know. You do raise some valid points which i find myself agreeing with. The fact is, if anyone burns another countries flag, or our own it is the epitomy of contempt, hate and dishonor for whichever country is recievieng the afore mentioned action.

In the movie "Rules of engaugement" The first thing Samuel L. Jackson does is retrieve the bullet ridden flag from high atop the flagpole of the US embassy roof, and made sure the US embassador had the flag in his possession before they took off in the bird. That's what the flag means to me, or should mean to everyone who is an american citizen. The flag is merely an icon, but one for which millions have given their lives for without question, and without regard for their own lives. This should be considered by anyone who has a mind to burn anyone's country flag. If anyone should burn a flag, they may as well shit on everyone's memory and effort they put forth to protect the very thing for which they gave their lives fo so others may live.

Doh! This is where you start holding your beliefs as a standard for others. Uncool.

I dare to make the educated guess that the vast majority of those who gave their lives did so not for the icon, not for the cloth, not for the flag. They did so for their country. They did so for their buddies. They did so because they were doing what they were told. Plethora of reasons... I know it's so much easier to have a single, simple reason, but please bear with me here.

Just as the reasons for which the many have given their lives in uniform are highly subjective, so is the perception of what a flag is to someone: highly subjective and highly personal. What it means to you is absolutely not what it means to everyone else.

Diversity is a beautiful thing.

So, to some, it's a paltry piece of cloth with dyes and patterns that serves as soft butt wipe when they've run out of Charmin. Fine. To others, it's a tool to make a point -- sometimes to proclaim patriotism, and other times to announce dissent. Fine, too. Let them do what they will.

Freedom is a beautiful thing.

That's very funny. However, it's a serious matter to a great many people who put their lives in danger every day to secure your freedom which that piece of cloth represents.

I have always wondered how many of them would still do that if they got absolutely no remuneration for it? No paycheck, no education assistance, just a bunk and some food.

(and before people start yelling, I don't mean to imply soldiers are in it for the money, I know they don't get that much)

I don't think it's unreasonable for them to expect to get paid. It's only fair (even with as little as they get). I don't think that reflects on any lack of true patriotism. I can tell you that money was NEVER the primary concern for me. It was all about the guys on my team and the job. I loved it and miss it a lot. I would have still jumped from planes, played with all sorts of weapons, and blown shit up for just a bunk and some food (at least for a while). B|

Well, that is probably why they do it - to get a rise out of people who think like you.

I wouldn't think a Hollywood movie is the greatest source of moral certitude about anything.

Probably not, but unfortunately this is the only moral certitude some get these days. Some producers do try to authenicate history. Maybe it's just bits and pieces like raising the flag on Iwo Jima (they used real combat film on that one).

WARNING - this may make some right wingers heads explode:

------------------
WASHINGTON (AP) _ Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton is supporting new legislation to criminalize desecration of the United States flag - though she still opposes a constitutional ban on flag attacks.

Clinton, D-N.Y., has agreed to co-sponsor a measure by Republican Sen. Bob Bennett of Utah, which has been written in hopes of surviving any constitutional challenge following a 2003 Supreme Court ruling on the subject.

Her support of Bennett's bill follows her position in Congress last summer, when a constitutional ban on flag-burning was debated. Clinton said then she didn't support a constitutional ban, but did support federal legislation making it a crime to desecrate the flag.

Fixed that for you. I don't support any law or Constitutional Amendment making it illegal to burn the flag. I support a persons right to make an idiot of themselves.

I think that right wingers and left wingers would explode on this - it's a bill to restrict property rights (my flag, I can do what I want with it). And to restrict free speech (as GM said, as stupid as it is, people can express themselves in this way).

Both are against the principles (private property and free speech) of the right wing.

And the restriction of stupid free speech is against the principles of the left wing.:P Even if they aren't too concerned about property rights.:P:P

I'm not quite sure who Hillary and Bennett are kissing up to. Mistake for both. Maybe they are showing she can draft proposals in a bi-partisan way before voting against it later - :|[:/]

Ain't politics wonderful? I support the right of congresscritters to submit stupid legislation -- it gives intelligent voters more information with which to make informed decisions.

The left-winger's head might not explode at that legislation, but it'd sure be pissed off.
