"Christmas" versus "Blue Laws"

Recommended Posts

I'm kinda local to this..

the 'holiday' tree was called that on the state website, much to the Mayors displeasure. Everywhere else its referred to as a Christmas tree.

The blue laws thing is simply business as usual here in MA.

TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking.

And as it stands now, the Christmas Tree and christmas is an American tradition, so at least in America

Only for the past 150 years though of course... since the British Royal family popularised it... despite the fact it drew scorn from the Church as being anti-Christian...

Of course until the last couple of dozen years no one would have been having this discussion yet because until very recently tradition dictated you only put the tree up on the evening of Dec. 24th.

So much for tradition.

PS. If you want to use the "traditional" name for the thing simply stick to "Tannenbaum" rather than this new fangled invented name "Christmas Tree".

:P

Hey now! Logic and rational thought have no place here.

1 - Who cares how it started, today's context is the only thing that matters. that argument is a complete wasted of time.

2 - Dear Government - please don't waste my tax dollars or various decorations and trees and lights in my (city, state, federal buildings). For that matter, I don't want commemorative coins or stamps, either, or museums, or special libraries, etc, or time in Congress to give someone an award, or other idiotic stuff beyond defense, law, and protection of the people. I don't see how any of thess other things helps you do your job. Stop spending money on this crap and lower my taxes instead. If I want to decorate my home with a Christmas tree, pagan symbol, or gutted chicken, I'll take care of it my self. sincerely taxpayer

It must be for "the general welfare".

I humbly suggest "Yule Tree" as being both traditional and inclusive.

>I'd bet only 5% see it as a massive religious holiday with overlording religious tones . . . .

Probably true. So there's no need to call it a christmas tree, or a holiday shrub, or a celebration conifer. You should call it whatever you want.

> just don't make an entire city do it to make you happy.

No one is. You just called it a christmas tree and no one arrested you. Problem solved.

>They can call it a Holiday Tree or whatever, but the public should
>sure as hell not bend to political correctness and call it something
>else just for a bunch of whining idiots.

The public can call it whatever it wants.

heh what's funny is that the Christian apologists have this awesome story about itinerant priests using pine trees to symbolize the trinity back in the 6th century or something.

Of course, theres a history of them believing anything they read, so it stuck

:P

Why do non-issues like this and the French drive you to post? Does this really affect your life or mine? Don't you think there are more important things to be upset about?

How do you feel about the fact that Kenneth Lay hasn't been tried yet?

There's something to be upset about...

Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.
