waltappel 1 #1 November 18, 2005 It occurs to me that the US's next big war will be with Japan. What better way to reduce the national debt than to kill the silly bastards that loaned us all that money. Great way to bring the trade imbalance down too. Not to mention the wonderful things it would do for marine life by eliminating their extremely greedy and cruel fishing industry. Besides that, they sound fucked up when they talk. waltappel 1 #14 November 18, 2005 QuoteAre you talking seriously or what? Is this the american sense of humor that I dont get? I'm perfectly serious. Never underestimate the power of unbridled greed for power and/or wealth. It's capable of generating unthinkable evils. The US is run by people who truly lust for power and greed and that being the case, I think Japan should be very concerned. The US economy is a house of cards built on a foundation of massive debt. Many people currently like to talk about how much of an economic threat China is to the US, but Japan is the far greater and far more immediate threat. The numbers are staggering. Check out these numbers from http://www.treas.gov/tic/mfh.txt. The top three foreign holders of US Treasury notes in Sept. 2005 are as follows (figures are in BILLIONS of US dollars: Japan 687.3 (33.2%) Mainland China 252.2 (12.2%) United Kingdom 182.4 (8.8%) The grand total debt is 2065.5 All Japan need do is dump those notes on the market and the result will be economic catastrophe. Granted, they would be screwing themselves and the rest of the world in addition to the US, but they have a "doomsday" weapon and I can imagine some people in the US government being very concerned about that. That applies to everyone. Japan would lose A LOT MORE by having the US collapse than it would gain. If every US citizen were to clean his/her bank account(s) and trade their dollars for Bengali Takas, the results wouldn't be pretty for the US economy. But I doubt too many people in DC are sweating it out... You think it would be any less disasterous if the US invaded Japan to get rid of one of it's larger creditors? You don't think every other T bill holder wouldn't respond by dumping them? Besides, as big as 700B is, it's what, one third of a single budget year? It's equal to our deficit for two years. I foresee a softer landing for all involved. Personally I think that they need A LOT more practise in the area of actually starting, fighting AND FINISHING a war all by themselves first.
