Do you believe in Miracles?

Recommended Posts

Just because I know this thread would eventually be moved here, I have it here.

Really...do you believe that Miracles Happen? The things that are beyond normal or typical outcomes? Furthermore, what do you feel might have contributed to that type of outcome? I've had several things that turned out in my favor which are unheard of over the past month and I just wonder if it should be considered as "miraculous" or that good karma was on my side or what...:S

By miracle, do you mean something on the order of:

an event in the external world brought about by the immediate agency or the
simple volition of God, operating without the use of means capable of being
discerned by the senses, and designed to authenticate the divine commission of
a religious teacher and the truth of his message (John 2:18; Matt. 12:38). It
is an occurrence at once above nature and above man. It shows the intervention
of a power that is not limited by the laws either of matter or of mind, a power
interrupting the fixed laws which govern their movements, a supernatural power.

Sometimes, things happens I don't have an answer or explanation for.

As an example, this is the second time I have typed the above response. As I was reaching my little finger over to post, the power blipped off for a second, rebooting the computer. Now, I could

a) fall to my knees in religious awe that my lord and savior cared about me enough to send me a
sign to accept jesus in my heart as my personal savior and spend the evening in prayerful repentance that I felt that those who had conversations with imaginary beings were nuts.

b) attribute the likelyhood to the extensive work being done on the power system down here following
Hurricane Wilma and with full and certain knowledge, deny the existence of god.

c) accept the fact that the power blipped off for a sec.

At the risk of furthering my rep a rigid, uptight religiously intolerant (of christianity only) name calling, activist who lurks in the shadows seeking out only those select individuals deserving of my satanic wrath to thwart spiritual awareness and growth ...I'm gonna go with 'C'. :)
So, do I believe in miracles. In a word ...no.

Yes. But they are miracles because we perceive them as such. One person might see a dam breaking just in time to put out a forest fire that would have destroyed a town as a miracle; the guy whose farm got wiped out by the flood isn't going to see it in the same light.

Some people expect the world to provide for them. When they don't get the job, or they don't win the lottery, or they find out that they didn't save any money, they blame everyone and everything. Sure, some great things may on occasion happen to them, but that doesn't come close to making up for all the bad stuff the world did to them. The world sucks.

Some people are the opposite. They work hard. They are decent to other people. They help people when they can. And they don't expect much in return. These are the people, in general, miracles happen to. Something bad will happen, and suddenly they will have a hundred people visiting in the hospital, or donating money to them, or helping them rebuild their house, or loaning them gear, or writing letters for them. And since they don't expect such things, the things that they find coming their way seem like miracles. And who's to say they are not miracles?

[sarcasm] Oh sweet Lord Jesus, You tried to show Jen the way, but just won't see the light. I'm so sorry Lord that she has once again rejected Your Divine attempts to show Your Majesty, especially in this latest, miraculous sign of tripping her power off then back on again. I mean Lord, if mortal man can't see you in that, then is there no hope? Please, Loving Lord, don't smite her, inspite of her insolence and self-enucleated blundering, but continue to give her more chances to reform her ways. Perhaps your next sign should be to have cold water come out of her shower when she turns the "hot" knob. [/sarcasm]

That's because she doesn't have the Holy Solar Power System. Such systems causeth God to grin, and causeth him to forgive such venial sins as running a PC without a UPS.

Miracles occur just about as often as disasters. Bad things happen all the time, but when a series of bad things collide and build off of each other, that makes a disaster.

On the other hand, miracles occur when a series of good things collide to make something spectacular. The odds of a miracle happening for you can increase via your own actions. When preparation meets opportunity, there you find a little personal miracle happening.

I believe in Miracles.
I can feel and see how God has looked out for me my whole life. From where I live to how I live. I believe God has helped me since I was born. I think there is many small miracles they don’t have to be big it can be as simple as having good neighbors that let you have your peace it doesn’t have to be a cure for cancer.
I'd rather be hated for who I am, than loved for who I am not." - Kurt Cobain

In a country the size of the USA with a population close to 300,000,000, something with the odds of 1 in a million of happening to any one person actually happens quite often.

If it's bad, like being struck by lightning, we tend to call it "Act of God", and if it's good we call it "Miracle". Either way, it's just probability.

And we call it a miracle that life was created from soup....ummm.....er.....no......it's impossible (or highly improbable).....that such an event could occur....say those who believe in miracles.

In an infinite universe, even the most improbable events happen countless times.
