1969912 0 #1 November 10, 2005 Anyone with personal experiences with absinthe? Is it worth trying, where to get it, etc? Nightingale 0 #3 November 10, 2005 Can't go wrong with Liqueurs de France. They're a British company and one of the most reliable companies out there. I've ordered some glasses from them, and I have friends who have ordered absinthe. 100% guaranteed delivery. Oh... don't order anything from the Czech republic or anything spelled "absinth." it's generally overpriced swill. Something from Switzerland or France is a good place to start. ExAFO 0 #4 November 10, 2005 Just so's you know, Thujone (apparently the fun part of Absinthe) containing absinthe can be seized by US customs (if it appears to be for human consumption).Illinois needs a CCW Law. NOW.
skytripper 0 #5 November 10, 2005 In ATL you can get the "fake-me-out" version (no wormswood) at your local package store. It's a bit on the pricey side, but is well worth it. I've had some wonderful all nighters jam packed with hardcore philosophical rants and raves - all positive energy. On one occasion, no one seemed to calm down. It made everyone feel like a freight train - non-stop insight, wit, and one-liners...crazy, man, crazy...it was like truth serum for a couple of us...but good times were had by allLife is a banquet and most poor suckers are starving! ~ Patrick Dennis' Auntie Mame
Frenchy68 0 #6 November 10, 2005 Good reading material "For once you have tasted Absinthe you will walk the earth with your eyes turned towards the gutter, for there you have been and there you will long to return."
Nightingale 0 #7 November 10, 2005 It can be seized. It just usually isn't, and companies that guarantee delivery will keep sending bottles until one gets through.
Nightingale 0 #8 November 10, 2005 Herbsaint and Arak Razzouk are good absinthe substitutes that are available at good liquor stores here in the US. They're both around $15 a bottle. I like Herbsaint better, but it's a matter of preference. Don't waste your money on Absente or something over around $25 a bottle, because most stuff isn't that good, and they're preying on people who think "absinthe" is going to be expensive. 1969912 0 #9 November 10, 2005 Thanks folks. I'll try it, but if I nut up and cover my cubicle with Ted Nugent stickers, you folks will get the blame Went to Cal Poly to be an engineer - shoulda gone to lawschool like grandpa. mr2mk1g 10 #10 November 10, 2005 Yes. Lots. I like it a lot. Shame you folks can't indulge. My favorite bar round here was called "Ether" - decked out like something from Space Odyssey 2001 - they had a selection of about 20 different labels and a lovely blonde barmaid. Pitty is it just closed down but there are plenty more. Despite what others might advise - it generally only the expensive brands which actually contain wormwood. Without that you're just paying for a highly alcoholic aniseed drink (which in itself is not to be underestimated). The only real way to success is to become or at least drink with a connoisseur or at least educate yourself thoroughly on the internet before purchase. Botellines 0 #11 November 10, 2005 QuoteAnyone with personal experiences with absinthe? Is it worth trying, where to get it, etc? Thanks, Jim Yep, 2 weeks ago, i shared a bottle of absynth with 3 buddys, I ended up throwing up all over my sister´s bathroom. She was not happy. 30 seconds later I kissed my girlfriend. She was not happy. Next day i was late for work. My boss was not happy. Man, i tell you, that is good stuff. Just make sure you don´t have too many responsabilities the next day, or that night for that matter...
Nightingale 0 #12 November 10, 2005 hehe... and don't set sugar on fire. then all you get is absinthe that tastes like burnt sugar.
1969912 0 #13 November 10, 2005 I'd prefer not to barf. What is the buzz like, though? "Once we got to the point where twenty/something's needed a place on the corner that changed the oil in their cars we were doomed . . ." -NickDG
Botellines 0 #14 November 10, 2005 QuoteI'd prefer not to barf. What is the buzz like, though? The taste is pretty similar to anise, although you will only taste it after the burning feeling stops. Real absynth is supposed to have halucinogic propertise if you overdoe with it, and trust me that it is easy to overdose if you do shots. Some people like to set it on fire first, and them cover the shot with your bare hand till the shot sticks to your hand, then you remove it and drink it. (it is easier to do it than to explain it) You have to be careful because you may not feel that it is stronger than, let´s say, whyskey or vodka, and therefore drink way too many. They will come back to you all together.
noluckned 0 #15 November 11, 2005 Tried it when I was in the U.K a while back. I didnt get totally smackarooned, but it did give me very intense and vivid dreams that night....I mean dreams in which you feel like your really are there, with loads of small details included...wind....smells....touch feelings, the works. Have not bothered to track any down since then though, I am a dyed in the wool beer drinker. *Disclaimer* The views expressed in the above post may or may not be the result of drunkeness or temporary insanity and should only rarely be construed as the views of the poster himself
Nightingale 0 #16 November 11, 2005 If absinthe is burning you, you've either gotten swill disguised as absinthe, or you're not preparing it properly. Absinthe shouldn't burn you or taste bitter. If you prepare it properly with cold water and sugar, it's quite tasty. Doing absinthe shots is a waste of absinthe. And no, absinthe will not make you hallucinate. Given the amount of thujone in absinthe, you'd give yourself alcohol poisoning before you start hallucinating.
