If you're in favor of the death penalty your really must
like this idea ... if you want to be consistent that is.

If detroying all bodily functions of a human being is an
OK punishment, cutting a thumb shouldn't even raise
an eye brow.

ok, but what about for vandals who are "rehabbed" and want to be productive members of society? Not having opposable thumbs will be difficult, esp. when one of their greatest skills (i.e. art, painting, dexterity) requires thumbs... seems too extreme to me. You could get the same effect w/ a different yet strong punishment.... and that's really the problem, isn't it? our punishments aren't strong enough... how about 6 months hard labor for first offense, years for the next, then life?

I think they should be given community service putting their mad skillz to work by cleaning offensive graffiti and painting cool city-themed murals.

I've seen some really cool work from the window of a passing train - it could be a city-showcasing arrival for travelers...

you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel loquacious?' -- well do you, punk?

Way over the top punishment.

catch them then put them into work groups to clean up each others grafitti.
Say 20 miles worth the first offence then escalate it if they re-offend.
make sure they do it at a weekend or when they have their leasuire time.

Each time they don't turn up for cleaning up duty then lock them up for a week. They will get the message eventually.

Comunity sentencing can work but it has to be enforced properly.

Any story that starts with "The mayor of Las Vegas..." is going to be nuts. You ever see that guy on tv? He reminds me of Bobby D. in Casino after he gets all whacky and starts his talk show.

lol!!! :D you are so right!

What do you expect from a guy elected by hookers, strippers, gamblers, and dealers? Hmmm...maybe I should move out there and take up politics...that's my ideal constituency B|

you've got my vote!

Dood....its just graffiti which is far more artistic and pleasing to look at than all the fucking billboards and advertisments you see everywhere. I say we get Canada to sue the paint manufacturers. Perhaps require an age limit to purchase paint? How bout a license too?

Perhaps a mandatory "I'm an idiot" tatoo on their forehead would be more fitting.

In early America, at Jamestown, Virginia, they would brand the back of the hand of a thief with a "T", so that everywhere he went, people would know he couldn't be trusted...

That's a bit drastic by today's standards.

I think a weekend spent scrubbing off their graffiti, and that of others, would be sufficient to deter most of them from future acts. Just like making litterers pick up trash alongside the roads.

You're missing the point entirely - this discussion is about physical punishments (in which harm is done to another person's body).

That's fine, but it has to be a logical consequence.

There are people who can paint with their feet or with their mouth. No thumbs required. So what do you take from a graffiti artist that would fit the "crime"?
