I wonder why the Arab countries killed the deal. Only thing I can think is that some of them wanted the war in order to destabilize the region. I'm pretty sure Bush has been honest about his latest claim that there are extremists trying to capitalize on the situation and create an entirely theocratic middle east. Too bad we obliged them.

I don't care what the topic is, the moment GWB opens his mouth I expect he is lying. He's >:(

If the truth and what GWB says ever have anything in common, it's pure coincidence.

My own theory as to why the Arab league rejected the idea is that Saddam leaving Iraq to go into exile would have created a vacuum which Iran would have been all too happy to fill.

A theocratic state that big, with those resources (yes, that includes oil) obviously is not congruent with the monarchies in the region (Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Oman, Qatar, etc.) or the secular governments (Syria, Yemen, etc.).
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

So you think it was the opposite of what I said? They thought a US invastion would prevent a theocratic state? I don't see how. If Hussein went into exile, other Baath leaders would have taken over. There may have been a power struggle among them, but not the levels of fundamental islamic activity we see there now. If nothing else, the Baaths were good at keeping the religious zealots in check.

WHich brings us neatly back to the original problem with this war - Ousting Saddam Hussein was only half of a plan!... And it's never good to do anything, let alone go to war, with only half a plan. >:(
