happythoughts 0 #1 October 20, 2005 clicky QuoteIn May, the Minnesota Office of Higher Education posted the inevitable culmination of a trend: Last year for the first time, women earned more than half the degrees granted statewide in every category, be it associate, bachelor, master, doctoral or professional. Women currently make up 57% of all college students. QuoteMaine's Department of Education, for example, created a task force to look closely at boys' poor academic performance and found a ratio of 154 women for every 100 men in the state's colleges and universities in 2000 That's 3 to 2. QuoteAs women march forward, more boys seem to be falling by the wayside, McCorkell says. Not only do national statistics forecast a continued decline in the percentage of males on college campuses, but the drops are seen in all races, income groups and fields of study QuoteYet because of potential conflicts with federal laws created to ensure gender and racial equity, educators "can't target resources to where they see the need," says Deborah Wilds of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

In others, it's because they make choices that lead to less money. It's just that being a woman per se shouldn't be one of them. That said, schools used to reward guy-like behavior. There used to be books about it. Looks like it's not that way anymore, or at least that the guys who didn't fit into class can't just hang out in shop class any more. There's a lot to be said for classes like shop and home ec; not everyone really wants to do high-tech work. ReBirth 0 #7 October 20, 2005 short response....bull shit long response....it's a proven fact and published by the US census (if you want a link look it up) that when salaries are compared for men and women using the same job duties, the same educational background and experience, and even working for the same company, women make less money. kelpdiver 2 #8 October 20, 2005 i call your bullshit with horseshit. if women make 57% of the college campus, but 10% of less in the hard science classes, don't be surprised if the income levels seem unfair. It's not the whole of it. You have legacy discrimination and the career penalties of maternity leave.

TrophyHusband 0 #12 October 20, 2005 please supply this link. i have a hard time believing that gender is a factor. motherhood may be a factor though. i can see an employer giving fewer raises to the person who take maternaty leave, works less overtime, stays home with sick kids, leaves work early to pick kids up from school, daycare, or soccer practice, and misses work for doctor's appointments. don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with this, but this isn't the employers' problem. if this study compares men with childless women, then i stand corrected. TrophyHusband 0 #15 October 21, 2005 first, you made the original statement, so burden of proof is on you. second, nowhere in my post did i even infer that you are a liar. i said that i didn't believe what you said, there is a difference. making a statement that you believe to be true is NOT telling a lie. as neither of us has provided proof of our beliefs, either one of us may be right. as i stated before, if given proof, i will correct my statement. kallend's link is 79 pages long so i haven't yet read it all, but i will. in the meantime, if you want to have an adult discussion about this, that is fine, but the tone of your last post leads me to believe you are looking to pick a fight. if that is the case, i have no further interest in discussing this with you. Quick answer. Statisically women are less reliable because they are more likely to get pregnant and dissappear on the company buck for months at a time. They are also less likely to put off going home and relaxing than working a 60 hour work week as many executive men do. Also the few that make the exception are making more money anyway. I have seen so many female managers who don't seem to know their ass from their elbow when it comes to doing their job and it makes me wonder if they were hired just to avoid it being said that they were sexist. .If I could make a wish, I think I'd pass.
