National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance

Quote

The National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance asserts that the primary goal of obesity research should be to improve the health and well being of fat people rather than on weight loss.

Isn't that a bit of an oxymoron, or am I missing something?

I didn't know such an organization existed until I saw a woman associated with this group arguing with a well respected doctor on MSNBC that being fat had no effect on ones health. "I'm going to be fat and happy like my 80 year old mother in law" :S

I just checked out the 'hall of fame' on their website, where they list Mama Cass of the Mamas and the Papas as a 'famous fat person' - who happened to die of major heart failure due to her poor eating habits and lack of taking care of herself. B| But being fat had no obvious effect on her health - right? :|

I hope I'm not the only one that finds it distrubing that a group of people are actually trying to debunk what the medical community has been saying for years now. But they must be winning considering, at least, the US is the most overweight its ever been.

I thought it was a joke, but it's not. Yes, I think you're right. It is an oxymoron. All that time, effort, pride...and their web-site has no pictures of their membership. Hmmm.... I guess the pics take up too much bandwidth and storage space on the servers ...Oops..weight, I found two pics here...http://www.naafa.org/internal/pics.html ...:S
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

It's for people who need to find solace in being fat and rationalize remaining that way for the long haul. Not a whole lot different than resorts for "plus-size" vacationers..

I went to the web site for "Freedom Paradise Resort" and found no marketing angle at all for the overweight crowd. It's probably because they want their web site to appeal to those of all shapes and sizes. Imagine if an unknowing and reasonably-sized person were to vacation there and the disgust and indignation that would result from seeing all those larders in bathing suits...

Be humble, ask questions, listen, learn, follow the golden rule, talk when necessary, and know when to shut the fuck up.

In other words, it is a resort for "Americans"? ;)

Sort of like taking a vacation to Chicago, eh? ;)

P.S. If you're really fat, it's your fault and you suck. Remeber, anorexia isn't always bad![;)

I *so* need to start my foundation soon.

Well, it's just as scary on the other end .... there's a whole pro-anorexia and pro-bulimia movement that exists. http://womensissues.about.com/cs/proanorexia/i/blproanorexia.htm Not healthy either.

Coming from a former very "fat chick" (and someone who probably is still considered a "fat chick" by a lot of peoples' standards), I will say that NAAFA is a crock. I thought it then, I think it now.

Maybe, just maybe, it started out with a good premise, that we as a society really do send the message that there is only one body type that is healthy. Not true, and combating that is probably a positive thing.

But to argue that obesity is a healthy choice in the long term? Wrong. Trust me. I was 32 years old and weighed over 300 lbs and it was about the farthest thing from healthy. I've lost well over 100 lbs now, and am the healthiest I've ever been.

However, the anger (yes, anger) and hatred and judgment that I'm seeing on this thread (and lots of other threads on DZ.com, for that matter) kind of explains why NAAFA feels it needs to exist. Truth be told, I hated myself when I was obese, too. The hate from the outside didn't help my case. However, I don't need NAAFA telling me it's a healthy lifestyle, because it wasn't and it isn't. I had an eating disorder of a different kind (I suppose I still do, I just know how to control it now), and I had to figure out how to deal with it. It's a little more complicated than "eat less and exercise more" but ultimately that's what it comes down to.

The obesity epidemic in this country is being caused and perpetuated by a complicated mix of factors, including agricultural policy (which directly conflicts with our public health policy), rampant consumerism (chain restaurants continually upping portion size to where it becomes the new "norm"), lifestyle changes (TV, internet, suburbs), personal choices, etc. It's not an easy nut to crack but organizations like NAAFA ain't helping.

I'd buy :D for my first (intentional) SC post but everyone knows it's fattening. :P
