Even by SC standards, that's a stretch. The very fact that the local authorities are attempting to prosecute a high profile child molestor and pornographer without the victim's cooperation would indicate the opposite. Maybe you should have found a better example to further your sparring match.

JohnRich 4 #80 October 21, 2005 QuoteHol crab, JohnRich, what kind of picture are you painting of your country? You must have missed my comment to Kallend: "It wasn't the crime that I was highlighting, but rather the way you branded virtually everyone in an entire state with a negative comment, for the actions of just a few people." Are you capable of understanding that the illegal actions of just one person does not represent the entire country? I'm sure I could also dig up some stories of pornography in Germany, if you would like. Then, according to your theory, the entire nation of Germany should be ashamed of themselves. Right? You're talking about a country which LEGALISED prostitution in 2002 and has a very lively & permissive sex-industry! There's loads of stories about pornography in Germany... ANd everyone in the civilised world goes: So What! Quote...the entire nation of Germany should be ashamed of themselves. Right? THAT was tried in '45 - WE've grown out of it! RkyMtnHigh 0 #83 October 21, 2005 Alabama law it is illegal to sell or buy sex toys..therefore no toy stores in the state. Even the mail order companies won't sell to you if you have an Alabama address. What I find strange is that they have a law against buying/selling toys but they have strip clubs and you can find liquor on Sundays now _________________________________________

ReBirth 0 #86 October 22, 2005 QuoteQuoteI'm surprised that doesn't violate the "commerce clause". It may in fact. I wonder if it has ever been challenged on those grounds. Nope....as long as they ban it for instate companies as well as out of state, it doesn't. For instance, there was a supreme court ruling a couple weeks ago that states that allow their instate wineries to ship to customers within that state, can't ban other states wineries from shipping to their citizens either. So....PA quickly (like in a day) banned all in state wineries from shipping within the state . It meets the standard...ban it for all, and it's ok. Meanwhile, 104 PA winery owners are screwed right before the holiday season.
billvon 3,118 #87 October 22, 2005 >Alabama law it is illegal to sell or buy sex toys.. With a little creative shopping Home Depot, the produce aisle and the local tack store should have enough stuff to keep even Alabamans happy. At least until they outlaw cucumbers and nylon webbing. The idea that keeping sex toys away from people will somehow make people more moral or something makes about as much sense as the "if we don't tell teenagers about sex they'll never figure it out on their own" philosophy. JohnRich 4 #90 October 23, 2005 QuoteWhy would people be ashamed of pornography? I'm not saying they should be. You guys are completely missing the point I was making to christalsabine. The point is, just because someone violates a sex law, or a few overzealous prosecuters charge someone with violating a sex law, does not mean that the entire state or country should be condemned as ignorant savages. But cristalsabine seemed to jump on that bandwagon. And she has a history here of riding on that bandwagon.

But some people here seem to like to take incidents of sex law violations, and brand an entire population because of that. See these German examples: Prostitution law violations in Germany 2nd paragraph from the bottom So there are sex crimes in Germany. Shall we apply cristalsabine's standard of judgement about Germany based upon these sex crimes?

Is this the "Bill Bennett remark" thread? I've explained this before, and it bothers me that you keep regurgitating this crap to try and brand me a racist. I never said that all blacks are criminals. I simply quoted the FBI crime statistics which show that blacks commit crimes at a rate much higher than whites. That's a fact. Stating facts does not make me a racist. Got it? billvon 3,118 #95 October 23, 2005 >Stating facts does not make me a racist. Got it? That 'whoosing' noise was the point sailing over your head. You claim that posting facts about how criminal blacks are, and opinons on what offing them all would do, does not make you a racist. Fair enough. If that's true, then posting facts about texas does not mean anyone is judging you or other texans. Do unto others and all that.

SudsyFist 0 #97 October 23, 2005 QuoteI simply quoted the FBI crime statistics which show that blacks commit crimes at a rate much higher than whites. That's a fact. Negative, sir. You quoted the FBI crime statistics and expressed your conclusion that blacks commit crimes at a rate much higher than whites. And you also presented (and continue to present) that conclusion as fact, when there are several signifcant unknowns that bring your conclusion to question. That's a far cry from fact. And Bill's bringing this up has nothing to do with branding you a racist -- it's about pointing out the hypocrisy of your actions. You loudly proclaimed *your* conclusion about a large group based on *some* facts which absolutely cannot paint the whole picture. Sound familiar? For what exactly are you chastisting Christel again? It could've been about blacks, it could've been about underwater basket weavers. Bill is pointing out how sensitive you are to this treatment when you're a member of the group in question, whereas you seem to be completely ambivalent about it when you're not. Your accusing him of trying to brand you racist is totally strawman, and just distracts and deviates from the point. Please address what he's saying instead. And, for the record, I don't approve of typecasting/making assumptions about a whole group based upon the actions of a few, regardless of whether I'm a member of the group in question. But I sure as hell can laugh when it's in jest (and done well), even when I'm the subject of the joke.

No. Definately not Nearly all of North American posters I "met", if personally or via this site, were absolutely open minded, humorous and interested in the world. There are really many which show me a nice, beautiful face of their country. So, it would simply be ridiculous to generalize. dudeist skydiver # 3105
