THE TRUE COLORS OF NEW ORLEANS COPS -LOSERS

The point was to squash any comparison of bad sports incidents to police beatings. They don't belong in the same conversation. I'm not sure where you even want to go with it.

My not very humble opinion of course. This is Speaker's.

This is not a comparison of bad sports incidents to police beatings, it's a comparison of assault in one job to assault in another job and how different jobs seem to drive disparate punishment and expectations. People want the cops to have their heads cut off while they expect the athletes to just be managed within their professional organizations. When did these guys suddenly become separate species subject to different laws. You seem to be against different punishment for people from different economic classes. How is this different? In fact, cops are poorer than athletes - why isn't this just as much a class issue than a career choice issue? Where's the ACLU?

The point was brought up because someone had an emotional response and brought up that cops should have harsher penalties for the same crime. I disagree, if a cop commits assault while on the job he's subject to the same law as if it were a doctor or lawyer or garbage collector, etc committing assault while on the job (let's just say the doctor has a permit to carry a gun so you don't get sidetracked on that). You flinched because sports is some kind of holy grail. I used sports, because they also have rare instances of (illegal) assaults during the execution of their jobs - more people can relate. Next time, I'll use construction workers if that makes you feel better.

Now if they want to have a separate law about cops doing their duty, then I have no issue with that. But I don't believe in unequal punishment for the breaking the same law. I'd rather the cops are jailed/punished for assault like anyone else would be. As far as their duties as cops, they should lose that job because they weren't able to do it correctly.

I'm not happy when people pull the "we need to hold (some job function group) to a HIGHER STANDARD". Bull, I would rather hold individuals to a high standard at all times. If someone cannot hold their temper, then they are a danger to society regardless of whatever job they hold.

You are the last person I'd think would hold a 'some farm animals are more/less equal than others' attitude.

...
Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants

No, that wouldn't. Cops *must* be held to a higher standard for the reasons I've stated twice. A license to kill entails a higher duty of care. BTW, attacking or killing a cop also brings in higher penalties.

You really didn't come up with good sports examples- the hockey assualts actually resulted in convictions. And the motive and circumstances are quite different.
