"We [as a nation] are not educated well enough to perform the necessary act of intelligently selecting our leaders," CBS News legend Walter Cronkite told the University of Southern California's Annenberg School for Communication last week.
Newsmax (and you) grossly distort his words. It is party neutral and absolutely true.
I didn't distort anything! I copied the total news report. I only asked for opinions and then I gave mine.......ssshhhheeeesssssss
if we falter and lose our freedoms,
it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

I'll rephrase - Newsmax's writing is, YET AGAIN, misleading. They really are a disgrace to the cause of the right.

Quotesorry, your .sig isn't well delineated from your postings. It appeared to be your commentary on it.

I will have to take your word for it (not too hard to belive however) But I still do not have any respect for Cronckite....
What did he mean with that statement.......I am assuming you heard or read it all.........
if we falter and lose our freedoms,
it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

But I still do not have any respect for Cronckite....
Why not? If you have no respect for the guy that defined the notion of the news anchor for half the history of TV, something's wrong with you.

I think he meant pretty much what was directly quoted to him in that article. American voters have a weak attention span to the details of the candidates and the media is not only failing to improve on this, they're contributing to the problem.

As for the media? ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, NPR and to a lesser extent FOX is causing more problems than aything else

Cronkite is a lying dick as best. I formed that opinion some years ago when he did a 60 min report on nuclear power stations. IMHO he is a leftist eleatist that does not think the US population is smart enough to vote correctly (ie: like him!) And they don't despite the best proganda attempts they throw at us........

Although Walter Cronkite has a soothing & resonant voice, at some point in the last number of years he's gone totally looney.
It'll be tomorrow but I'll try to find some links to quotes of what he was saying last spring, but it was stuff like "Bush ordered the CIA to fly the airliners into the WTC so that we had a pretense to invade Iraq, with the purpose being for and Rumsfield and Cheney to grab the oil " and so on.
Say what you want about Bush, but IMHO you're looney if you think Bush coordinated the attacks on WTC. And no, I don't necessarly have to the respect the political analysis of looney people, famous or not. Nor do I have to respect people that wish to take away my right to vote, which is what he seems to want at present.
And do you know many Vietnam veterans? Many have nothing but scorn for the man. You have heard of the Tet Offensive? Do you think we won, or lost, that battle? Why? (We won, but "the most respected man in America" said we lost.)
You can have it good, fast, or cheap: pick two.
Cronkite made the startling comments late Friday during an interview on CNN.
Somewhat smiling, Cronkite said he is “inclined to think that Karl Rove, the political manager at the White House, who is a very clever man, he probably set up bin Laden to this thing.”
Interviewer Larry King did not ask Cronkite to elaborate on the provocative election eve observation.

actually, he said afterwards that he didn't think the war was winnable.
To say that we are closer to victory today is to believe, in the face of the evidence, the optimists who have been wrong in the past. To suggest we are on the edge of defeat is to yield to unreasonable pessimism. To say that we are mired in stalemate seems the only realistic, yet unsatisfactory, conclusion. On the off chance that military and political analysts are right, in the next few months we must test the enemy's intentions, in case this is indeed his last big gasp before negotiations. But it is increasingly clear to this reporter that the only rational way out then will be to negotiate, not as victors, but as an honorable people who lived up to their pledge to defend democracy, and did the best they could.

Though many may blame him for forcing the beginning of the withdrawl, who are they kidding? Popular support wasn't going to make the situation any better.
QuoteThe man once known as the most trusted journalist in America no longer trusts Americans to vote for their own leaders, saying average citizens are just too ignorant to cast their ballots wisely.
I agree with him, and here is why.
QuoteWe [as a nation] are not educated well enough to perform the necessary act of intelligently selecting our leaders.
First, he says we, as a nation, are ignorant. This in no way means that he thinks they are stupid. It means he believes they lack knowledge of facts, not the intelligence to understand those facts. I truly believe if we had an informed populace, and higher turnout for all elections we would have had completely different candidates on the ballots for nearly every election I have been alive to witness.
If you have mediocre candidates, you will get mediocre results.
The media enables this. Some of the journalists, but primarily the owners. The news should not be entertainment. The news should not be propaganda. The news should be non-profit. It loses credibility when the advertisers and the owners get to bias the content, even indirectly. The news should be about the latest facts about what is happening in the world around us. I give two shits about celebrities or their personal lives, except that they should be left alone to live them. Please don't waste my time with it. I would much rather hear about the things that actually affect my or others' lives, now or in the future.
QuoteThe CBS legend also said that he fears that the blogosphere could threaten the standing of the mainstream media, adding that news consumers are already confused by cable TV's "opinion journalism.
One needs to look no further than Speakers' Corner to see how much internet commentary is left vs. right, instead of honest dialogue. God forbid anyone should ever be swayed by a good argument. Blogs are no different.
One thing I have figured out in life is that the elderly tend to have wisdom far beyond mine. I'm seldom quick to discount what they say simply because I don't immediately see that wisdom. Cronkite is a pretty old guy, and has seen far more in his lifetime than many others his age. You never know, he may just have a clue.

Well, at least he limits it to average citizens...more than I would do.
All you people who vote straight party ticket....your party may run a pig for office. Are you going to vote for the pig?
Yeah it's been done before.
