kallend 2,146 #1 September 9, 2005 IMO Daley should be forced to rebuild it... From the EAA Hotline: FAA Determines Meigs Closure Illegal, Imposes Maximum Fine: Nearly 2 1/2 years after the fact, the FAA has determined that Mayor Richard Daley violated federal law when he ordered bulldozers to carve large "X's" into the runway at Chicago's lakefront jewel, Merrill C. Meigs Field, after midnight March 30, 2003. As a result, the FAA has levied a $33,000 fine, the maximum allowed by law, on the city. "This vindicates what we've said all along," said Steve Whitney, president of the Friends of Meigs Field. "Mayor Daley's midnight massacre of Meigs was illegal. Good government doesn't happen in the secret of night." The group calls on Daley himself to pay the fine. "The Mayor of Chicago knew when he did this that it was illegal and would incur fines," said Whitney. "Taxpayers should be outraged if they are made to pay for such blatant abuse of power." The FAA is also investigating whether the city improperly used over $2.8 million in restricted federal aviation funds de! signated for airport improvement. According to documents filed by the City of Chicago in December, $2,887,462 in airport funds was spent to demolish Meigs and make way for a nature park. If found in violation, the city may incur additional fines of $8 million or more. For more information, visit www.friendsofmeigs.org."... matthewcline 0 #2 September 9, 2005 Unfortunatly this abuse is all to common. We have 2 airports here in TN that either the mayor or the mayor and manager of the airport are abusing their power over. They do this eve nafter the FAA has warned them and found against them in seperate investigations. MattAn Instructors first concern is student safety. So, start being safe, first!!! ViperPilot 0 #5 September 9, 2005 IMO Daley should be tied to a pole at the front gate of Oshkosh every year. What you do when you walk past him is, well, up to you.

Rookie120 0 #7 September 9, 2005 I rarely stand behind the FAA on most issues but I wish they would nail Daileys nuts to the wall. The FAA has over stepped it's bounds itself a number of times. Just go ask Bob Hoover what he thinks of the feds. But that said, the day I heard what happened to Meigs I almost choked although I wasnt all to surprised comeing from the crook that Chicago calls it's mayor. What is the status on Meigs now? Is it bulldozed to the ground or whats it look like now?If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!
ViperPilot 0 #8 September 9, 2005 It's pretty much just a field now...heard something about buiilding an ampitheatre there. Here's a fun fact...the Republican party in Chicago (so like 5 people) pledged $10,000 to anyone who could get Daley indicted on federal charges. I hope this retarded move works...although it won't. But, it'd be really funny if it did; screw Daley.

I have some really cool memories of Meigs it sucks to see what has happened to it. Now it's going to turn into another place for pimps, crack heads and hookers can hang out at.If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck! Highly doubt that...considering the location. not too much traffic out that way... I grew up in Bridgeport. Have always been a Dailey supporter(who wasn't in my neighborhood)...but what he did at Meigs is just unacceptable. Marc otherwise known as Mr.Fallinwoman.... tigra 0 #11 September 9, 2005 Seems to me that Daley's ultimate goal is to squeeze all the pimps, hookers and crackheads OUT of the city and into surrounding suburbs. Areas that were once considered "ghetto" are now hip and trendy with the prices and RE taxes to prove it. Yeah, he's a crook just like his dad, but he's not going anywhere! I would love to see him personally pay that fine, but for someone like him its just a slap on the wrists and it won't bring Meigs Field back.

Gawain 0 #15 September 9, 2005 Why did he rip it up anyway? Was he thinking a security risk? I just remember seeing pictures of it, but don't remember the issue at hand.So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! AndyMan 7 #16 September 9, 2005 He ripped it up because he always wanted to. Daley always wanted that land to be a park. This is a trend going around accross the country where cities are getting rid of their lakefront airports because of their insane real-estate value. Toronto may follow, and I would expect Cleveland to happen eventually. The federal government had been holding him back, promising help renovating o'hare. When the bill to federally mandate the o'hare project failed, daley figured he had carte blache to do what he wanted with Miggs. Aparently he was right. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead.
