From my cracker point of view, it is a total joke when a rich black guy talks as if he is one of the oppressed ones. Kanye West is only one example.
Ironically most people who can view his background without bias feel the same way about Bush's downhome everyman cowboy image.
TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking.

I've seen it first-hand for many, many years and honestly don't think it's a solvable problem.
Nobody questions that blacks have historically been treated unfairly in this country, to put it very mildly.
The problem that I see is that is has turned into a self-perpetuating thing. The level of hostility is constantly rising, which makes many whites resistant to finding any solution, which, in itself, raises the level of hostility.

As a matter of fact, that watermelon and a bucket of KFC sounds like a pretty good start.

In much the same was as Clinton's "I feel your pain" remark.

Would you like a 40 oz. malt liquor and pack of Kools with that?![]()

If you would take a minute to live in the real world, I changed the word 'black' to 'ignorant' because I wholeheartedly believe this is not a race issue. Since you seem to be unaware of how to use a dictionary, I will help you out some:
ig-no-rant-adj.-1. Lacking education or knowledge. 2. Demonstrating a lack of education or knowledge. 3. Unaware or uninformed.
If you took a moment to read my first post before attempting to place words in my mouth, you would see that I defended his actions based on the fact I believe he thought he was doing a good thing.
QuoteWhether or not Mr Kaynes' statements are based in fact is really irrelevant .
The fact is that many Black Folk hold the same belief. There is talk in the Black Community of a violent overthrow of government and forcibly taking reperations from the rich white people.
Still smiling?
How you gonna appease do 's Nigga's?
I am ignorant as to what this is supposed to mean.
(Bonus points for correct usage of the word of the day)
QuoteThere is talk in the Black Community of a violent overthrow of government and forcibly taking reperations from the rich white people
Yeah, because those people are a bunch of idiots and still think they're owed something for what their multi-generations-ago ancestors went through. What a cop out. They're just being irresponsible and ridiculous. Thank God a good amount of black people aren't like that...including the several I know.
Kayne West is just another idiot trying to start a cockfight over his skin color. Total d-bag.

As Cliff said, that is pretty much beside the point. The fact is they exist and are potentially a threat to this country's stability.

I obviously can't speak for Cliff, but to me the change from "black" to "ignorant" came off as an example of the kind of forced "color blindness" that a lot of white people express in this country.
I'm not saying that is where you are coming from, just that it reads that way to me.
What Kanye west was saying definitely is a black attitude in this country. Kind of an institutionalized combination of paranoia and resentment that exists in the black community.

Again, I think this was triggered by the "color blindness" thing. I've heard blacks complain about the pseudo-liberals who try to sanitize their conversations by eliminating all references to race and pretending that racial differences don't really exist. The complaints were that what was really going on was a masked racism. I happen to agree with that.
Again, I'm not saying that's where you were coming from, but I can easily see how that could be read into your post.

Blows my mind though how you take race out of the equation and look at everyone equal as people and upset people who still want race to be a separation

QuoteWell apparently people will find a way to read into anything just what they want. I was clarifying my view on it.

Strangely enough I can relate to it. Years ago I worked as a janitor in a hospital. I was raised in a white middle class family where class-consciousness dictated that janitors are very low in the food chain.
Being a janitor was a real education. I realized that I was in a class of people that is almost invisible because it is "politely ignored" by much of society.
For example, when you meet someone and the inevitable, "So, what do you do?", question arises, answering with, "I am a janitor", typically gets a response like this:
"Oh....." [long, thick silence]
At first I thought it was kind of funny but after a while it started to wear on me. I viewed it as honest work and a great deal less nasty than the temp job as a nurse assistant that I had held. The reason it wore on me was the, "I'm sorry I asked" attitude that usually came when I told someone how I made a living.
When people obsessively take race out of the equation it's like they are refusing to acknowledge that racial differences exist. In fact, comparing it to my experiences as a janitor, it implies an inequality--something to be swept under the rug and ignored, and that really is insulting.
Walt
When I read the recount of your janitor experiences, I can relate to that...up until about 5 months ago, I was always the 'lowly one' I got the same reaction you did. When I got irritated with it, instead of volunteering what I did, I often skirted it or gave them such a broad answer they did not really know...forcing them to know (and presumably judge) me as a person first. I figured out when I surrounded myself with the non-elitest type attitudes, they never even asked...because it did not matter. ANd for the record, many elitest types I view as ignorant as well.
I (maybe naively) still do not see a difference in the races. I see differences in people that traverse all races and ethnicities. I dont see this as sweeping it under the rug, I see it as focusing on the root of the problem...individuals mindset and beliefs..by taking out the irrelevant variables...afterall it is the attitude I would like to see changed not any physical attribute. Did that make any sense at all??
QuoteI guess we just have differing views on it then.

What you are saying makes perfect sense but black people do not have the option of hiding their race and are quite often treated differently because of their race.
As you allude to, it really is kind of a no-win situation. I choose to acknowledge ethnic heritage but pretty much treat people the same when I meet them.
When I was in high school, forced busing and race riots were the reality I experienced. A black guy pulled a knife on me in one class and later sucker punched me in another. Whether we liked it or not our skin color was our uniform and we were in the middle of a war.
I no longer have any resentment from those experiences, at least not consciously, but it's quite ingrained in my mind that there are significant cultural differences between White America and Black America. Some of the differences are really cool and some are a real pain in the ass, but the differences are there.
I think all that anyone can really do is acknowledge the differences but make the effort to look for a common ground.
