Gravitymaster 0 #1 September 1, 2005 Considering the Billions of $$$ being spent in Iraq and the Billions of $$$ that will be required to clean-up and rebuild New Orleans and Mississippi, which do you think is more likely to happen?
Frenchy68 0 #2 September 1, 2005 I think the US will keep troops in Iraq, yet still be able to invade Louisiana, Mississippi AND Alabama. Been watching all the looting on TV. Reports say some of them have acquired guns and are actually having a shoot-outs with the police. I feel like I'm watching a scene in a third world country. It's heartbreaking to hear and see so many homeless, hungry people. I hope everyone will give whatever they are able to help these people out.
Tonto 1 #4 September 1, 2005 QuoteI feel like I'm watching a scene in a third world country. What makes a country 3rd world? Is it it's location? Is it its economy? Is it it's lack of available resourses? Is it the lawlessness of it's government, or the lawlessness of it's citizens? I was in LA during the 1992 riots. I think many in the US are just under the boil most of the time, and when they get a gap - they go for it. Big time. tIt's the year of the Pig.

Newbie 0 #6 September 1, 2005 I think the question you should be asking is, "what effect has the war in Iraq had on Katrina?". Why city's defences were down - cuts in spending to raise levees blamed on war in Iraq "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts

J Well if they knew about it for 30 years, yet chose to cut funding to the one thing that would have prevented such a calamity being so serious (i.e. the necessary funding for the levee's to stop them breaching) do you think that was a wise decision? The Department for Homeland Security has failed to secure the Homeland - one of the mainstays of their role. Too much money being spent on war, not enough on actually protecting those people at home. AlexCrowley 0 #10 September 1, 2005 I think its a good indicator of exact how far we've come since we lived in caves. With the exception of nike trainers, skydiving and Phil Collins I'd say not very far at all. Scratch just below the surface and we're still pack animals that react with fear and aggression for survival. TV's got them images, TV's got them all, nothing's shocking. jdhill 0 #11 September 1, 2005 So why don't you complain about the governor of LA, and the mayor of NO... they have clearly neglected the problem too...All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund Burke

How does that tie into a federal cut back in the spending on the levee's in New Orleans? I don't follow... "Skydiving is a door" Happythoughts
jdhill 0 #13 September 1, 2005 Why do you think it is the federal government's responsibility to build a levee? It is not (or was not) a federal priority, the local officals knew it (its been that way for 30 years), and should have acted on their own... or yelled louder that they needed it... lets not forget that Congress has a hand it the cut too, so it was not one person's evil plan... wildblue 7 #14 September 1, 2005 QuoteSo why don't you complain about the governor of LA, and the mayor of NO... they have clearly neglected the problem too... RKF is already doing that. Actually, I think he directly blamed them for the hurricane - blamed their easy environmental policies for global warming, which made Katrina stronger. it's like incest - you're substituting convenience for quality
billvon 3,116 #15 September 1, 2005 I have an alternative - we will not change what we're doing in Iraq and instead save money on New Orleans. It's already happened to a large degree. From ABC: -------------------------- LA National Guard Wants Equipment to Come Back From Iraq Yunji de Nies August 1, 2005, 9:07 PM CDT JACKSON BARRACKS -- When members of the Louisiana National Guard left for Iraq in October, they took a lot equipment with them. Dozens of high water vehicles, humvees, refuelers and generators are now abroad, and in the event of a major natural disaster that, could be a problem. "The National Guard needs that equipment back home to support the homeland security mission," said Lt. Colonel Pete Schneider with the LA National Guard. Col. Schneider says the state has enough equipment to get by, and if Louisiana were to get hit by a major hurricane, the neighboring states of Mississippi, Alabama and Florida have all agreed to help. ----------------------- Looks like we're not getting by.
