bodypilot90 0 #1 August 30, 2005 Must be all the skydivers http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20050830/ap_on_he_me/uganda_aids QuoteNAIROBI, Kenya - The Bush's administration's emphasis on abstinence in its international AIDS policies has worsened a condom shortage in Uganda and could lead to an increase in its HIV infection rate, a top U.N. envoy said Monday. QuoteStephen Lewis, the U.N. Secretary General's special envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, said U.S. cuts in funding for condoms and a new emphasis on promoting abstinence had contributed to a condom shortage in Uganda, one of the few countries to succeed in reducing its HIV rate. QuoteMark Dybul, deputy U.S. global AIDS coordinator, dismissed Lewis' claims as "nonsensical." guess what Mark you don't have sex you will not get aids! JohnRich 4 #3 August 31, 2005 QuoteStephen Lewis, the U.N. Secretary General's special envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, said U.S. cuts in funding for condoms... Gee, how darned hard would it be for the rest of the world to make up the funds that the U.S. has cut back? Are we the only nation in the world capable of buying condoms and giving them away? Where is France? Where is Germany?

The EU pledged 2.37 billion to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, most of which went to Africa. The US pledged $1.65 billion total to Africa. In 2004, the US donated .16% of its GNP to developmental assistance programs; France donated .42%. So that's where they are - buying condoms.

In 2004, the US donated .16% of its GNP to developmental assistance programs; France donated .42%. So that's where they are - buying condoms. So, let's see, Frances .42% of a $1.737Tr GDP = $7.3B. The USA's .16% of a $11.75Tr GDP = $18.8B That was through the official channels. Hmm. Now, the EU, 25 nations, compile 2.37B, of which "most" goes to Africa. Let's say 90%. That's 2.1B. Divided by 25, that's a mere $85.3M. The US, by itself, provides 1.65B, all of it going to Africa. Who dug deeper into their pockets? Come on Bill. If you want to compare foreign aid figures, the US, through all channels, public and private, gives far more than the rest of the world, and by a large margin, and does so most of the time, with very little fanfare. So, in answer to JohnRich's question, I'd have to say yes.... So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! GTAVercetti 0 #7 August 31, 2005 Just to be devil's advocate...you really need to go by percentage to determine who ismore charitable. Look at a smaller example: If I have 10000 dollars and give you 10%, I still have 9,000 dollars...plenty to pay my rent and perhaps, with wise investing make some capital gains. If I have 1000 dollars though and give you 10%, I have 900 dollars left...which in some cities will not pay rent...and certainly not utilities too. Which one is more charitable? The guy who gives 10% even though it may make it harder to pay rent or the guy who gives 10% and still have plenty to spare? So, yes, the US does give more dollars...but we give more at a lower % because we have more in total. The key here is that France is giving a higher percentage of their total money than us. Do not get me wrong...I think the US gives plenty of money. I just think your argument is a bit flawed. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing. I agree, and that's great. France gives a far higher percentage of their total available money, and _that's_ great too. That's not a reason to slam either the US or France - unless you really need an excuse to slam someone.

bodypilot90 0 #11 August 31, 2005 QuoteSo that's where they are - buying condoms. you don't need condoms to live, Just stop porking everything that walks and blame it on the evil americans. Here we are again liberals do not want to take personal responability for their actions and the actions of others, it's a lot like blaming pd for a bad canopy when you hook turn your canopy into the ground. Frenchy68 0 #15 September 1, 2005 In my Junior year of high school (in France), condom dispensers were installed in school bathrooms. And for the anecdote: in French, a condom is called an "English cover"! Go figure. OK, done, with French condom history. Carry on...
