This is so senseless.........

Actually, I do see what Bill was getting at with his post. He was commenting on the blanket statement that harming "helpless" animals is wrong. I actually didn't really didn't see any "outrage" about the sentiments he expressed, just that they didn't apply to the case of the big man attacking the tiny cat with a sword.

Animal shelters- I don't think most adults kid ourselves about what happens to unwanted animals there, we simply feel its a more humane alternative to a life and death on the streets as a stray. That said, I think I'd have to exhaust every possible alternative before I took any stray to a shelter, but I also have to accept that I can't provide a home or a happy ending for every homeless animal.

Euthanasia- yes, I'm glad that's an an option for our beloved animal companions when their time comes. No, its not something I feel I can do myself. My hands would shake and my eyes would be blinded by tears. The best I can manage is to decide in my heart when the time is right, and take my pet to the vet and hold him in his final moments. Does that make me somehow a less worthy pet owner than the guy who can take his cancer stricken dog into the woods with a shotgun and pull the trigger?

that's a good clear post (except for the 'every possible alternative' statement - it's so abused nowadays I don't even know what it means) and I'm on your side.

But, some poster were confusing Bill's digression with the topic even though I thought the Bill was clearly not writing as support of the nutcase. Or they were doing it on purpose just to be contentious - which can be fun and is only balanced considering Bill's normal posting tactics.

As far as your question? no, not less worthy, just less able to control your emotions when doing a necessary task even when gut wrenching and sad. More and more people are like that than ever before. It means they can't do what's right when it's needed, and they lose it when they shouldn't too.

I don't "know" if that's a good or bad thing. But I think it's a bad thing when we aren't required to do our own dirty work. I think we've lost something in terms of personal strength as a result of avoiding tests of personal character like that.[:/]
