BillyVance 35 #2 August 23, 2005 Amazing how they can just implement the draft, without ever declaring war on the enemy. Not that I'm against taking Saddam and the Taliban out of power and staying to stabilize their countries, but I don't remember any declaration of war... then again, terrorists are not your average enemy..."Mediocre people don't like high achievers, and high achievers don't like mediocre people." - SIX TIME National Champion coach Nick Saban

Ragnarok 0 #4 August 23, 2005 ^ that is really fucked up. I agree that the draft is uncool. A Voulnteer Army is the way it needs to stay. I don't know why we are in Iraq, I hated being there. I don't want to go back so Bush can line the pockets of contractors and pay 6 figure salaries to gaurd Iraqi VIP's - while Soldiers die for an extra 275.00 a month....._________________________________________ Twin Otter N203-Echo,29 July 2006 Cessna P206 N2537X, 19 April 2008 Blue Skies Forever
rushmc 23 #5 August 23, 2005 ...from www.powerlineblog.com August 23, 2005 Armed Forces Recruitment Exceeds Targets Ralph Peters has a nominee for August's most important unreported story: while the media were in a frenzy over Cindy Sheehan, the armed forces have quietly exceeded their recruitment goals for FY 2005: Every one of the Army's 10 divisions — its key combat organizations — has exceeded its re-enlistment goal for the year to date. Those with the most intense experience in Iraq have the best rates. The 1st Cavalry Division is at 136 percent of its target, the 3rd Infantry Division at 117 percent. What about first-time enlistment rates, since that was the issue last spring? The Army is running at 108 percent of its needs. Guess not every young American despises his or her country and our president. The Army Reserve is a tougher sell, given that it takes men and women away from their families and careers on short notice. Well, Reserve recruitment stands at 102 percent of requirements. And then there's the Army National Guard. We've been told for two years that the Guard was in free-fall. Really? Guard recruitment and retention comes out to 106 percent of its requirements as of June 30. As Peters says, patriotism is alive and well. But what do the young men and women who enlist and reenlist see when they open a newspaper? The Cindy Sheehan Extravaganza. Predictions of disaster. The depiction of Michael Moore as a hero and our soldiers as dupes. And a ceaseless attempt to convince the American people that there's no hope in Iraq. The ugly truth is that much of the media only cares about our soldiers when they're dead or crippled. That's a story. If the major media weren't too self-absorbed to see outside the liberal cocoon, they'd be ashamed of themselves. kallend 2,150 #6 August 23, 2005 That article co-mingles recruitment and retention so it's impossible to see what actually is going on.... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.
rushmc 23 #7 August 23, 2005 True enough, regardless, it is not as bad as the media would have us believe............"America will never be destroyed from the outside, if we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves." jdhill 0 #8 August 23, 2005 It's not impossible, you just have to understand that its about end strength, not recruiting or retention individually. If they are missing their end strenght numbers there could be an issue, but I do not believe that is the case... and its certainly not the chicken little cry of "the draft is coming" that rhino keeps singing. Gawain 0 #9 August 24, 2005 Quotehttp://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,166490,00.html The draft will be here soon. They won't have a choice. Rhino I disagree. While new enlistments in the Army will be missed this year, the other branches are making their goals, and more importantly, re-enlistments within the Army are way beyond goals (when looking at specific units). That 107% Army-wide seems conservative to me.So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! rhino 0 #10 August 24, 2005 Quotethe other branches are making their goals Sure they are.. Mom and pop know that if little Johnny joins the Air Force or Navy he won't be on the front line. Marines and Army however is a different story. I am not singing anything here. It is my belief that we will definitely see the draft in a short time to come. Especially with the Pentagon saying 4 more years with 100k+ troops left in Iraq. Our forces are being worn out. People are getting out by the MASSES. Don't be fooled. I have dozens upon dozens of Marine and Army friends alike that are just tired, tired of Iraq, Afghanistan and being away from their familes so much. Rhino During Vietnam, there was a couple of interesting approaches. Option 1- "You were convicted of a felony. Go to jail or enlist in the Marines." I had two friends who avoided jail through this method and visited Okinawa. Option 2- McNamara's 100,000 plan He sold it as part of the "War on Poverty". He was giving people "opportunities". These recruits were previously unacceptable because of low educational scores. Remember - the minimum reading skill was 6th grade. They were given 6 months of training and remedial education. This is the beauty part - the education was an optional 6 week English reading/writing course given in Hawaii. You have 6 weeks in Hawaii to learn English before going to a country of French and Vietnamese that you may not return from. Imagine the attendance. The draft will never return. The average drafted soldier is less motivated and educated than the volunteers.

"They" (meaning the US armed forces) don't make such decisions - Congress does. And Congress voted on it last year. Only one Congressional vote was in favor of it. Every other member of the House (all 500 plus) voted AGAINST. "This GUY is falling! This GUY is falling!" mh ."The mouse does not know life until it is in the mouth of the cat." While it may have been OK then, it is illegal now. You cannot join any branch with an open criminal case pending (even a speeding ticket).
