Lisa D. Jefferson cannot silence the haunting cries, "the hollering and the screaming" that were the anguished background to her 13-minute conversation with United Flight 93 passenger Todd Beamer before the hijacked plane crashed in rural Pennsylvania.

While Beamer's parting words on Sept. 11 have become a global catchphrase of heroic defiance against terrorism, the Airfone supervisor in Chicago who comforted him in his final moments remains tormented by those other voices. "When I hear 'Let's roll,' I feel good because I know it was something I helped bring to the nation as a rallying cry, but other words I heard that day are what stay with me," Jefferson said in a recent interview. "There were people screaming for their lives and that weighs on my mind a lot. I heard people saying, 'Help me Jesus,' 'Oh God' and 'The plane is going down!' "

Lisa Jefferson, 43, the shy Baptist daughter of a Chicago city-bus driver and a mother who worked as a meat packer, will spend the first anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks receiving a "living hero" award from the American Bible Society in New York City.

"I haven't worked through it all, so it will be an emotional day," she said. "Whenever I have a moment to myself I think about the phone call, and I constantly replay it in my mind. It does cause emotional distress. I am not handling it well. I wish I was handling it better than I am."

"I think all of the people on the plane were heroes - every last one of them," she insisted. "I don't consider myself a hero. I just did my job."

In truth, if she had it all to do over again she would prefer not to take the call that has brought her fame and more than two dozen awards for heroism, Jefferson said.

All 44 people aboard United Flight 93 died in the crash. From the information relayed in 26 Airfone calls from that flight, and from cockpit recordings, investigators think the passengers on board attempted to overwhelm their four hijackers before they could crash it into their intended target. President Bush told family members of Flight 93 victims that the target might have been the White House. ( Actually, I believe that later, after they had captured & interrogated Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, they discovered that the intended target was the Capitol building, not the White house. -Speedracer)

Jefferson was working as a customer-service supervisor in the GTE Service Center in suburban Chicago on the morning of Sept. 11. She and other employees were listening to radio reports about terrorists flying planes into the World Trade Center and into the Pentagon near Washington, D.C., when the Airfone operator at Station 15 summoned her at 9:45 a.m. She took over the call from her operator.

The caller was Todd Beamer, a 32-year-old Oracle software account manager from Cranbury, N.J., who was on United Flight 93.

After Beamer described the terrorist situation on the plane, Jefferson said, "I asked if he wanted to be connected to his wife and he said no, that he did not want to upset her as they were expecting their third child in January." Instead, he asked her to call his family and let them know he loved them "if I don't make it out of this."

Jefferson promised that she would.

Jefferson and Lisa Beamer now talk regularly on the telephone. "Lisa and Todd's entire family have called and sent me letters and

thanked me. A lot of people have called me a blessing and an 'angel sent from God' and that has helped a lot," she said.

Unlike a mobile phone, the on-board Airfones use a frequency that does not interfere with the plane's communication/navigation system.

...which means you can NOT call the pilot from the cabin, meaning you can NOT warn him of what's happening in the back... Coincidence? I think not...

Have you by any chance been on commercial flights? If you take a close look you might notice the intercom they have for the crew...

I'm saying that if you read "CAREFULLY" perhaps you will understand. you actually stated that "you can not warn" the pilots of what is happening on the back of the plane, but never consider what we now know, that the islamic extremists did was take over the cabin, while the people were put in the back of the plane....

just another coincidence to add to the overflowing pot of them. how many coincidences do you need to see in order to think that there may be more to them than just a coincidence? one or even five is acceptable to me, but i have seen over 2 dozen. some may be drivel, so if you cut that # in half, that leaves too many for me to accept. i once had a bumper sticker on my truck that said "i love my country but i fear my government". i stand by that statement to this day.

But the data is from the CBT itself - I know how much bullshit is on the internet, and I for one don't have a lot of trust for the media. More than $2 million in contracts was never exercised, and some of the trading led to Deutsche Bank, but I have not been able to find any more info other than that. If this was investigated, who bought the contracts?

I thought it was statistically weird too. I still think its fucked up. Fact is that the Feds investigated it here and said 'nothing to see', which effectively means that you'll find dick unless you know people who are intimately involved - and I dont know anyone who does. Yes, it's odd, but its just an oddness, but there are many of them to do with the entire situation, none add up to anything and most are rationally attributable to human error.

I really dont know how much further they got than that, my guess (and merely a guess), instantly classified to follow up (doesnt take much thought to consider that it was probably someone involved closely, or closely enough) or it was a dead end and no one wants to admit that because people will start asking questions like "how the hell can someone get money anonymously, and can i have some too".

Overall 9/11's conspiracy has been more about covering up the fact that so many agencies crumbled under pressure, and protecting those people from public scrutiny - rightly or wrongly. In all honesty if you were to say 'Hey, it was Bill in the FAA scan room' the poor guy would be fired and then killed by a mob.
