"Over There" on FX

I, on the other hand, am regularly counseled to keep my cool at work :D. But here there's always time to think.

Just remember this show was created, produced, green lighted and aired on a FOX network station. I thought FOX was the Anti-Hollywood crowd ;)

Like all the networks -
FOX is a "pro-profit" crowd

lately, I think most everybody is in the anti-hollywood crowd. so that's easy

i know that it airs on fx. at first i thought that this was fox affiliated, and then someone told me that it wasn't so, i don't know.

as far as fox being anti-hollywood, they're a tv station that goes for ratings just like the rest of them.

It willl lose it's military audience quickly if it's anything like Walt described but we only make up a small percentage of the population. Therefore the majority, people who have never served and are curious or feeling guilty about it, will watch.

Just my opinion

I know they're your enemy but ever considered that they are just pissed off Iraqi's who want us out of their yard? I'm sure that if you looked you'd find a few agnostics behind the triggers too.

Considered it yes. We already know that the vast majority of them aren't even from Iraq..

You beat me to it, but I'd like to add a few thoughts.

I often wail on Muslims, but I don't view them as being, in general, a whole lot better or worse that Christians or Jews.

Consider. If I were to start a joke with, "A Christian, a Muslim, and a Jew walk into a bar...", you would expect the joke to be funny because it is starting of with something that seems highly implausible. Implausible because of the ongoing animosity between them.

If I said, "A Christian, a Muslim, and a Jew walk into a war", you have the daily news.

Sad, isn't it?

I rant about religious fanatics who kill in the name of their god because they put us all at risk, even those of us who aren't the least bit interested in playing their sick game.

As for Muslims being "my enemy", until they develop an intolerance for the murderous thugs among them, I will consider them to be enemies of the world, because they threaten us all--even other Muslims.

Feel free to take the above statement and change "Muslim" to "Christian" or "Jew".

Walt

Yea, there quite a few Deobandi and Wahhabist Arabs fighting there, but the majority?

I watched the first in a series last night. In my opinion the show was ridiculous from the outset, and not based on any one person's experiences in Iraq. "Over There" attempts to demonize the soldiers that are serving over there. The depiction of the characters is terrible. The group of 6-8 soldiers walk around calling each other by nicknames, and doing things that are against policy. Making this the perfect propaganda against the action in Iraq.

I read some very high reviews of it, but that wasn't evident in the pilot. Seemed like they're were trying a bit too hard. I think everyone should wait a couple more episodes before writing it off. First episodes are often a bit odd.

I don't think it is the director's intent to demonize, either. More to depict that our soldiers are youngsters being sent out to do a very difficult task without the full support and backing. It will be more clear soon enough...then I'll either keep it, or drop it from the season pass list.

i think he's captured the whole situation accurately with the satement above. everyone has to remember this when criticizing the military for all the scandals going on. i was there in desert storm, and again in enduring freedom(afghanistan). when you realize that youths are notorious for making bad decisions and getting into trouble because of a lack of experience, it should come as no surprise that when you give them guns and try to kill them on a daily basis, things get slightly more serious. while never having seen the show, i do know that some people in my unit in afg. had alcohol and there were instances of 'fraternization'. when i was in iraq years ago, there were numerous incidences of people smuggling drugs and alcohol over from germany inside vehicles. i even got an aks out of iraq by wrapping it up and placing it under the engine of my tank when it got pulled. unfortunately, i was out of the military befor i was able to retreive it (they just don't pull pack because you forgot something). i also know of a stupid individual who mailed an ak-47 home and got caught when he bragged about it (it actually got there and they confiscated it).
the point i'm making is, people make mistakes, but for the most part, they're doing a good job over there. as for hollywood's portrayal of this war, if you need comparisons, watch any war movie. they don't make many accuate ones.
