jkm2500 0 #1 July 28, 2005 I watched the first in a series last night. In my opinion the show was ridiculous from the outset, and not based on any one person's experiences in Iraq. "Over There" attempts to demonize the soldiers that are serving over there. The depiction of the characters is terrible. The group of 6-8 soldiers walk around calling each other by nicknames, and doing things that are against policy. Making this the perfect propaganda against the action in Iraq. The plot was terrible and the military obviously had no oversight in the making of this series. This is especially apparent when the company commander has his chin strap on upside down. The troops portrayed are undisciplined, and claim that they are not there for th oil.....just to kick Iraqi asses. In the concluding scene a couple of these troops are stowing away in a convoy to go to anouther "supply dump" a couple miles away to get some booze sent over in Listerine bottles. The convoy pulls to the side of the road and one truck runs over a mine. One of soldiers is severly injured, and they quickly toss (and I do mean toss) him onto a stretcher and into a Huey. I won't say that I agree with everything that is going on over there. However, it seems to me that demnizing the people that are willing to go out and insure the freedoms that you and I enjoy is a good idea. I spent 356 days there, and very little in this show actually happened, or is happening there. I think the show is garbage. The primary purpose of the Armed Forces is to prepare for and to prevail in combat should the need arise.
Hackb431 0 #2 July 28, 2005 Damn I missed the show but was looking forward to it hoping it would give some of these whinny bastards that have not served the opportunity to see what life can really be like. FYI I did 2 tours with the 31st Infantry in the Stan and have never been to Iraq.HackB A.K.A. "Puppy"

tcnelson 1 #4 July 28, 2005 yeah, i was hoping that they wouldn't fuck it up but, i wasn't holding my breath. hollywood is notorious for being filled with non-knowing, love-to-hear-my-own-voice windbags that wouldn't realize life happening around them if it was stapled to their simpleton foreheads."Don't talk to me like that assface...I don't work for you yet." - Fletch NBFT, Deseoso Rodriguez RB#1329

kelel01 1 #6 July 28, 2005 If they actually did those things, and it was captured on video, how was it inaccurate? It might not be an accurate depiction of the AVERAGE squadron, but these events he speaks of HAPPENED. They weren't puppets acting out these soldiers' lives. tcnelson 1 #7 July 28, 2005 they didn't actually do those things. that's the point. the show is complete fiction."Don't talk to me like that assface...I don't work for you yet." - Fletch NBFT, Deseoso Rodriguez RB#1329
AggieDave 6 #8 July 28, 2005 Quote If they actually did those things, and it was captured on video, how was it inaccurate? Uhhh...this is a ficitonal story shown in a documentary style. It has a writer, a director and actors, not soldiers in real combat. Infact, this is listed: "Plot Outline: A dramatized take on war in Iraq. "--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."
kelel01 1 #9 July 28, 2005 Ohhhhhhh . . . *light bulb* Ok. Then I can certainly understand the frustration. Wow, it sounds like a pretty freakin' dumb idea for a tv show. I never paid attention to the commercials, but I thought it was a reality show, with a much more serious undertone than most.
waltappel 1 #10 July 28, 2005 I caught the last half of the show and thought it was pretty well done. I was not looking at it for factual details--hell, it's a fictional TV show!--just for entertainment Speaking of entertainment, the scene where they were blowing away all those Muslims in the sandstorm rocked! There was a scene where the upper half of a Muslim guy's body was vaporized by an M203 and for a second or so, the Muslim's body from the waste down was just kinda standing there like some totally bizarre jeans ad or something. Whoops! Say "hi" to Allah when you see him, Akmed! Walt

Nah, someone will still feel that it was bigotted, and if you really think about, it still is, but I think your statement (or should I say his) is about as close to "not like a bigot" as you could get. Hackb431 0 #13 July 28, 2005 I second that Wendy. I don't want to speak out of place but after reading a few of your posts Walt it seems like you have some pent up rage. I am just curious where it comes from. Without sounding like a complete buttmonkey myself after two tours overseas I know where my prejudice comes from. But I am activley trying to get over it since I have been back. It's hard but I am getting better. Just don't get me drunk and ask me to tell war stories cause I revert right back to it. And I don't like that side of me.HackB A.K.A. "Puppy"

waltappel 1 #15 July 28, 2005 Folks, we are talking TV-land here! If it makes you feel any better, if it were Christians killing in the name of their God, I would have been cheering on the killing of Christians. Same for Jews or anyone else for that matter. Pent-up rage? Maybe. Personally I think it is a massive amount of not-so-pent-up disgust at the dispicable things that religious fanatics of all flavors can commit in the name of their religion. I don't understand religious people. Not at all. Not one bit. Even the nice ones, and most are, I just don't understand them. Either I am totally clueless for not seeing something that is very obvious to the rest of the world or they are so mind-numbingly gullible that I can hardly even comprehend it. I see organized religion as being a control mechanism to try and tame some of the natural chaos. It can be used for good or evil. If good comes of it, right on! When evil comes of it, I don't hide my disgust. In general, organized religion to me seems like one psychotically out-of-control practical joke, and when someone uses that joke as a basis for "justifying" doing horrendous things to innocent people, I reserve the right to laugh and cheer when a *fictional* TV show shows them getting their due. And Wendy, my feelings are not about "us vs. the enemy". It is about murderous thugs getting what is coming to them. Muslim != murderous thug in all cases, but nutcase_religious_fanatic_killing_in_the_name_of_god = murderous thug. Walt p.s. Wendy, just for the record. I've always thought you were really cool. I still do and always will, regardless of what you think of me or my bizarre ramblings.

wmw999 2,565 #20 July 28, 2005 Without the quote marks, it's hard to tell how deep into the character you're getting. Really. But I'd've posted the same thing in reply no matter who said it, too. That said, I've always found studying extremely religious people, who are willing to bound their lives significantly, to be interesting. They seem to explore in different directions from most of the people I know, and can find enormous satisfaction. Without being smug. Of course, then there are the ones who know exactly what God is thinking, and would love nothing better than to beat you about the head and shoulders until you agree. tigra 0 #22 July 28, 2005 The previews I've seen for the show do make it seem like its a "real" documentary type show with "real" soldiers and "real" footage. Kind of misleading.
