circumcision

Recommended Posts

I am cut and not happy or un-happy about it. I can't say that it has impacted my life at all.

In the 50's, when I was born, it was thought to be the best thing to do for health reasons - so my parents had it done. After all being born in a hospital was a big deal - my generation was the first in my family to do that too! (my father having been born at home was never cut)

My son, born in the 80's, is un-cut. Why? Because it was shown to be medically unnecessary.

Other then being better looking then an ant eater - it is odor-free, it feels cleaner, and cuts's enjoy better sex according to some.

A recent AAP report stated that circumcision does offer some benefit in preventing urinary tract infections in infants.

Circumcision also offers some benefit in preventing penile cancer in adult men.

Circumcision may reduce the risk of sexually transmitted diseases.

Circumcision virtually eliminates the accumulation of smegma.

Circumcision unquestionably facilitates better hygiene and the avoidance of conditions that result from uncleanliness

But not a necessity

Careful reading of this this document suggests that at least the claim of "cuts's enjoy better sex" is unfounded.

http://aappolicy.aappublications.org/cgi/content/full/pediatrics%3b103/3/686

"There are anecdotal reports that penile sensation and sexual satisfaction are decreased for circumcised males. Masters and Johnson noted no difference in exteroceptive and light tactile discrimination on the ventral or dorsal surfaces of the glans penis between circumcised and uncircumcised men."

Personally, I don't see any reason to put an infant through a surgery that is completely unnecessary. Babies are fine the way they are born; there's no reason to "modify" any body part. If the child wants to be circumcised when he's an adult and able to decide for himself, I have no problem with it, though.

what a decision to have to make for a man.

most cut guys say cut.

most uncut guys say don't.

most americans are cut.

most non-americans (other than for religious reasons) are uncut.

what to do?

I think the girl should make the decision for herself. However, mostly the western world considers it butchery.

Ditto for boys - I see no difference in principle between male and female mutilation.

All of my 4 boys are cut. See no problem with it.

Not even sure why I am involved in this thread:S

Did you have their appendices removed and their tonsils out too, just in case these developed medical problems later in life?

>My problem is, "how do they know this?"

Maybe asked someone who got circumcised when they were 25?

Yep. My oldest brother was 22 when he finally decided to do such step, as he's got enough having troubles. All of my other brothers (between 18 - 20) did the same within one year.

My baby boy was 3 y/o, when our doctor strongly recommended to let him cut as skin already was too tight and he would be in real troubles next years. This is 20 yrs ago, he's a happy young man now.

If it's necessary for a boy, it should be done.

Girls don't feel the difference, why should we care?:P
Seriously, in some countries circumcision is tied to religion and parents teach their uncut sons very early how to clean themselves so there is no headcheese, shmegma or whatever you want to call it. None of my uncut exes had any.

having been "cut" as a baby, I have had no experience with dealing with this.:S never seen smegma.

There were studies done in Africa that showed the circumcised men had a significantly decreased chance of HIV infection compared to uncircumcised in poor countries, but this correlation is not seen in more modernised countries.

Wasn't this an episode on Seinfeld, something about "Turtle Neck vs. Crew Neck"?

We have two adopted sons from another country, the youngest had to get snipped for medical reasons last year..he was 13.

Poor little guy suffered in silence for a few months before he finally couldn't take it anymore, and let me know there was a problem.

His brother who is still a turtle neck, is considering the operation for social reasons...[:/]

School shower rooms can be hell these days if you're 'old school' equipped I guess.

We've assured him that he's 'normal' and things will sort themselves out as he gets older. But if it becomes enough of an issue, people have gotten 'cosmetic' surgery for less reason.

Personally...I have to agree with Kallend's comment
(as lightning strikes!;))
in that any surgery, unless absolutely necessary is an unwarrented risk.

News:
The study's preliminary results showed that circumcision reduced the risk of contracting HIV by 70 percent -- a level of protection far better than the 30 percent risk reduction set as a target for an AIDS vaccine.

My Dad told me they used my detached foreskin down in the burn unit for skin graphs - glad to know I could help:)

Yeah, I heard that there is in fact a 'no charge' policy
for infant circumcision....But, they do take "Tips":P

Man, I'm sure glad my parents circumsized me as a baby. That way I don't have to remember it. I couldn't imagine having to go through that now. B|
