Tsunami - Help from around the world..(6 months on)

Recommended Posts

Just found this intersting table in The Times...
Who..........Promissed Paid
Japan............$502m $502m 100%
UK ...............$140m $136m 97%
Italy .............$113m $67m 59%
Norway...........$172m $79m 46%
USA...............$353m $133m 38%
EC...................$49m $19m 38%
Canada..........$348m $68m 20%
Netherlands....$268m $42m 16%
Germany........$682m $105m 15%
France...........$468m $60m 13%
Australia........$431m $31m 7%

I draw no conculsions from these data yet (I need to read more of the article first) But it may appear that some of the richer countries on the planet did a lot of chest pounding and boasting 6 mounths ago and (as yet) have not come through with the goods.

No, just a country with a remarkably large number of uninformed yet arrogant people who have been taken for a ride by their government.

how because one website said we only gave 133 million fucking dollars??? Do you realize how much money that is considering the suffering we still have here. If you havent noticed, we have homeless, we have orphans, we have our own problems, yet we continue to help out other countries, you look at the small scale, you read a link on DZ.com and just quote it all over this board, yet you do not remember that link says we as a country as tax payers gave 133 MILLION dollars how much help did we get when we lost BILLIONS of dollars due to a horrific hurricane season last year? HOW MUCH DID WE SEND TO THE OTHER COUNTRIES WHO ALSO SUFFERED IN THOSE HURRICANES?

This website shows a more accurate picture, for those who do not wish to read everything and just want a glimpse this is what the US to date has SPENT on the tsunami, including transportation and supplies NOT just the amount of cash given

Quote

$350m in government donations, plus military assistance involving 12,600 personnel, 21 ships, 14 cargo planes and more than 90 helicopters. Around $200m of private donations are also pouring in, with $120m donated to the US branches of the Red Cross, Oxfam and Save the Children, and to Catholic Relief Services.

One of the things that it seems that you're missing, is that the table only compares what governments promissed (whilst publicity was high.... helps them look/feel good) but now that it's moved not only from the front pages, but for the main.... out of the news altogether...... the promisses are left hanging.

On the other hand it doesn't mention all of the very generously donated private sums.

Also, dont kick your government (too much) it's far from the worst on the list.

lol I LOVE my govt and my country, I think we for the most part do the best we can considering all that has to be taken into consideration. Hell we spent approx 3 billion dollars to fund UN systems, some of which were voluntary, yearly.

In my opinion we do our part, also in my opinion I think we do to much.

The point, which you miss as if it's deliberate (and I guess it is), is the comparison of promises with deliverables, and the comparison with the Rookie120's statement (linked) that the US is the only country that does anything.

The US has spent 350 million on the tsunami, it promised 353, the figures that were presented on the start of the thread were just the monitary amount not the cost of relief, not the cost of items to provide relief just the money. 350 million HAVE been spent by US to THEM

I for one think it is more important to fund this war then to provide more then promised to tsunami victums. This thread is not comparing Iraq to Aid in Tsunami, it is a thread that stated INCORRECTLY that the US didnt give aid as promised.

Do you have a definitive source exposing the error?

PS if you're going to SHOUT, at least shout with correct spelling.

wow always funny that when someone cant think of anything constructive they resort to insults, myself included.

Meant to paste the link, here it is. Also shows what other countries have done although I am not sure if this includes private persons

Maybe I'm reading it differently from you, but I couldn't see that $350M had been given, just pledged, which is different.

The comment about the spelling was to discourage you from SHOUTING to emphasize that you can't spell.:P

You're mixing up two sets of figures love. There's nothing on the Nationmaster site which casts any doubt on the figures given by Shropshire, which are from the very reputable Times newspaper... not a website... that's not to say they're right... just that there's nothing I can find to dispute them.
