LONDON (AP) - A call centre worker in India sold personal data on 1,000 British customers to an undercover newspaper reporter, the paper reported Thursday.

The Sun said it paid the equivalent of $6.75 Cdn each for details on the Britons' bank accounts, credit cards, passports and drivers' licences, including numbers and pass codes. Addresses and phone numbers were also included, the tabloid said.

The New Delhi-based seller said he had bought the information from contacts who work in the call centres, which have become a booming sector of India's economy.

The man reportedly also provided three-digit security numbers from the backs of credit cards and customers' answers to security questions meant to safeguard their accounts.

The Sun said it had given the information to the City of London Police, which said all the financial institutions involved had been informed.

"An investigation is now underway," a police spokeswoman said. "Therefore it would be inappropriate for us to provide further details at this stage.

"At this stage we are not fully aware of the breadth of what we are going to be investigating. We have been handed information and it is being reviewed."

She would not say which institutions were involved.

they write them down as people give the information to them

5-10 an hour x500 reps x 365 days = a lot of Identity theft

think how useful this would be to terrorists

do we really want to continue sending our jobs to countries like this?
