Skydivers don't care if you're gay. This is a sport that anyone who loves the sky can enjoy. Who you sleep with is somewhat irrelevant.

Oh, and I know 2 only because they are open about it. I'm sure I've jumped with many others.

Have you ever done 3-way with them? ...... Come on, I mean a 3-way skydive. ;)

skydiving is just a microcosm of the population. there is some of everything. i think the only difference is that skydivers are an adventurous bunch and seem to be more layed back than the population.

I expected skydivers in general to be more tolerant and laid back, so when I first started jumping, I was surprised at the attitudes of some (not all) of the "old time" jumpers. I've even been surprised by some of the attitudes expressed in these forums. As you say though, there is some of everything in the community. I'd say the skydiving community is no more or less tolerant than any other.

I don't know about that. *Some* skydivers I know are extremely homophobic. I remember being shocked by that when I first got into the sport.

I gotta admit I've never met any homophobic skydivers, but I did wonder about the sport as a whole when I started jumping. Something about the rainbows on fraphats. I thought everyone was gay.:D

bingo. i also think you'll find the same with any group of people because, in the end, people are people.

What about the old rainbow colored rigs and jumpsuits?:o

I know a few gay jumpers...

But like others have said skydiving is just like real life.

There is a mix of different types of people in everything.

yep

Though the nature of any event, hobby, sport, or whatever often tends to mean there are more or less of one portion of society that is involved. I figure its a giant matrix of precentages and somewhere you find a row that describes us and includes the average number of this or that trait, race, social stratum, whatever that composes the cultural group "skydiver"

Clearly we have more thrill seeking people in our group than exist in the rest of society, on a percentage basis of the two wholes. (or maybe not, im just guessing)

five or six that i know personally (on both 'sides') plus two i know of from here...

i'm sure there are more.. it just has no bearing on actual skydiving and some people are not 'flaming' about it so it never comes up...

There's a mailing list for gay/les/bi skydivers:

http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/RainbowSkydivers/

At some point, they discussed a small "gay way" side thingy at WFFC this year in Rantoul. And by "gay way", they mean a skydive formation :D

Mailing list has been quiet lately, though. Ping it if you're one of the community and want to set up a meet there.

FYI, not going to WFFC this year (not enough jumps anyway). I've got my mind set on Deland for another event.

Personally know? I've never really counted. Six or seven.

You know more than that cause I know of more than that that you know . . .

Name calling and put-downs come from both sides of the fence, eh?
I don't agree with homosexuality so therefore I'm "homophobic"...yeah, whatever....

It's not clear why you identify with Tigra's post (which didn't mention you) if it doesn't apply to you. We learn a lot by what others spontaneously deny.

--

On a bigger topic, I do wish someone would explain what "I don't agree with homosexuality" means. Does that mean you don't share our opinion that Johnny Depp is totally hot? That's ok. You don't have to agree with us on that one.

If that's all it is, then no. Not agreeing/sharing our infatuations does not make you homophobic. But if your phrase "don't agree with homosexuality" means you harbor ill will to us for loving in the 'wrong way', then yes. I think that's the very definition of homophobia.

And in that case I'd have to say that yes, Tigra's comment maybe does apply to you. But in a clinical way, not a name-calling way. Don't you agree?

I've come across more gay females in this sport then males.Ya never can tell, if you really care enough to try

I know 5 - 4/1 and all very cool folks

I was an avid cave diver and used to travel with a global group that would meet at top locations every year. Did this for 6 years with the same 7 guys.

Only recently was I made aware that 2 were gay -

certainly did not fit any stereotypes

who really cares anyway - might add more fun around the dz if a larger portion of "all outters" were buzzing around - always found them entertaining and uplifting to say the least
