slug 1 #26 June 6, 2005 QuoteMr. Cave finds army recruiting taking a slump in a wartime environment in a time period where parents of potential recruits grew up in the Vietnam era newsworthy. To what depths has journalism dropped? Hi Anvil I think the army is trying to figure out how to reach their personel requirements for a all volunteer military during these challenging times. Mr cave was just pointing out that some of the challenges the recruiters have always experienced are getting worse. Who ever believed what a recruiter told them. The military has a recruitment problem because the cat is out of the bag about what a 4 yr enlistment means, National Guard and reserves: one weekend a month 4 yr's. Heard a blurb on the news about the army considering some type of 1.5 yr enlistment. . IMO the military has already found a solution to their low recruitment problems. Merc's oops did I say that I mean "contractors" When the price is right the the people shortage won't be a problem. Support our troops and their families!!! R.I.P. I lived in Orange County and got phone calls at home from recruiters, 6 months after I graduated. Are they more aggressive somehow at Long Beach Poly? We need more coverage of the Jackson trial and Britney Spears' latest marriage! None of this depressing military and war stuff. Hardworking americans don't want to hear such things; they're confusing.

Hi Kelp Sorry I'm not a california person so don't know the difference between orange county, or long beach poly. The recruiters have to go to the high schools were they will be most successfull. IMO it's not going to be where the majority of the kids are going to go to college on their folks nickel, or going to get a good job out of high schol due to their folks, or friends. In order for recruiters to get close to their quotas their going to look for kids with few job opputunities in the civilian world. The latest media feeding frenzy about the recruiter caught on tape telling a potential recruit where he could get a mail order HS diploma and how to pass a UA by using a masking agent is a bad sign. The fact that the army had a one day training session for their recruiters after the mdia circus tells me this wasn't a isolated case of poor judgement by one recruiter. If the military want to hire quality people to operate their high tech equipment they are going to have to pay competitive wages, come up with realistic tours of duty and stop using loopholes like stop loss. The all volunteer army was based on a lot of troops that had family's that would be able to enjoy a stable family life. thats not happening now. We discussed recruiters meeting their enlistment goals in this forum befor and were told no problem mision accomplished. Didn't make to much sense at the time but not worth a yes no SC circle jerk. We don't see the military's recruitment problems being solved for quite a while. Lets support our troops and their families.R.I.P.
TheAnvil 0 #30 June 7, 2005 I've a bit of knowledge about military recruiting, having done a bit of it myself for a short time. I don't find any point in Mr. Cave's article to be insightful in the least. I would hope that anyone with even a minute amount of reasoning ability would be able to discern on their own that war=recruiting slump, Vietnam Era parents=recruiting slump, or that military recruiters are not welcomed by all. A far more interesting piece of journalism related to recruiting would be on how many schools produce students that are incapable of passing the ASVAB and how that affects recruiting. Or perhaps coupling the recruitment slump with the stop-loss policy on the Army's infantry divisions and discussing those effects on the Army as a whole. The only realy factors affecting recruiting that Mr. Cave took into account were the war and parents from the Vietnam Era. There are so many others things that factor into the recruiting equation that his article doesn't really impress me at all. Then again, perhaps my own experience skews my own views a bit. I consider his article mediocre-at-best. Vinny the Anvil Post Traumatic Didn't Make The Lakers Syndrome is REAL JACKASS POWER!!!!!!
