QuoteInteresting..an FBI agent violates the law and steals classified documents implicating the President in an attempt to cover up a second rate burglary whose goal was to steal non-classified documents from a political party. Why didn't this agent merely go to the press and tell all he knew about the cover-up, instead of sneaking around and having clandestine meetings with reporters. Why was this crime any less than Nixons? Shouldn't this agent be brought up on charges?
You are displaying very little knowledge of the historical facts and the political climate during the Nixon administration. Watergate was minor compared to other activities the "plumbers" were involved in. Recommend you read up on the stuff that was going on. The guy was a hero - he ensured the end of a criminal and deeply corrupt administration.

For someone who professes to know so much about Watergate, you certainly dodged the question. BTW, I lived in DC during Watergate. I lived through it with the daily deludge from the Washington Post. I won't defend Nixon or what he did. He broke the law, and he got what he deserved. This FBI Agent also broke the law and should be punished. Don't preach to me about Watergate. I can assure you, you're in over your head.
Edited to add: I find it disgusting and deplorable that this agent broke the law because he was upset that he was passed over for a promotion. What a piece of shite.

And remember....mr. law abider....we all break the law......and it took people to break the law to make changes in this country and the world.........Sit back and think what would happen if the "deep throat" revelaed himself back then....come on I know you have not forgotten what it would be like if the government was after you!
I love and Miss you so much Honey!

Did you also know that Felts was convicted of authorizing illegal break-ins to the homes of The Weather Underground? Some hero you have there.

If Felts had acted out of concern for the law and the country, I wouldn't have the same opinion of him. He didn't, he acted because his panties were in a wad because he wasn't promoted to FBI Director. Then several years later, he's convicted of the same crime he helped reveal about Nixon. Apparently Nixon made the right call.

others mean and rueful of the western dream"

Yea but Ronald Reagan pardoned him so it's all good. You can't make this stuff up

And then there's Linda Tripp. A whistle blower like Felts, the treatment she recieved was far different.

QuoteWhat I find so amusing is the Liberals all thought Deep Throat was some Patriot within the Nixon Administration who saw a corrupt Presidency and through some moral higher calling, decided to betray the Administration. Liberals went into journalism because they dreamed of being the next "Woodstein" and wanted to become famous by replicating a Watergate type story. The truth is Deep Throat was just some disgruntled Federal Employee mad because he got passed over for a promotion. He is now living in a small room, completely broke, while Woodward and Bernstein have made $$$millions off the story. All the poor guy wants now, is to sell a book to pay medical bills. I doubt if Woodward or Bernstein have ever offered to help the guy out.
Does this somehow exonerate Dicky "I am not a crook" Nixon in your eyes? I am not sure I understand your point here.
The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.

Not at all. If you read my previous post, I said I wouldn't defend Nixon because he broke the law and got what he deserved. The point of this post and others I have made in this thread is to point out that Deep Throat in many ways was at least as guilty as Nixon in that he committed crimes. It is also to point out that the aura of this mystery person as someone of high moral character who saw wrong doing and tried to make it right has been stripped away and that the truth about him is that he was just some disgruntled public servant who had his panties in a wad because he was passed over for a promotion.

The theft of the medical records of a prominent Vietnam war critic comes to mind as an example. Woodward and Bernstein had clearly reasons to be concerned about their safety when they were working on the Watergate story. So in this climate it can not surprise that a “whistleblower” would use “alternative” methods. People in the know were intimidated. You need to take this into account. No question that Felt was flawed himself, however I believe he did the right thing and only the press had the power to uncover the illegal practises of the Nixon administration.

QuoteYou stated earlier that you are old enough to remember events at the time, so I am surprised that you do not take into account that the Nixon administration used illegal means to prosecute their “enemies”. There were a lot of illegal actions both via “special” groups like the “plumbers” and the illegal use of FBI and CIA.

Then why wait 30 years after Nixon resigned to reveal yourself? Think about it.

2) Well, maybe he would have, maybe he wouldn’t (if appointed to head of FBI). Who knows. However, it was still the right thing to do and probably the only effective method under the circumstances at the time.
Just a comment in regard to whistle blowers in general: Being a whistle blower can often at least cost you your career. I don’t think that you can expect people to sacrifice everything just to make the public aware of something bad going on. I have full sympathies for whistle blowers trying to stay anonymous and “guide” journalists towards the facts.
Example: I saw a documentary about the Alaska Air crash off the coast of California about 5 years ago. There was a maintenance engineer at Alaska who blew the whistle on unsafe maintenance practises. He used the right channels going to the FAA/ Safety Board. Result? He lost his job and never was able to get work in the airline industry again. I fully understand why whistle blowers do want to stay anonymous and not use the “proper” channels to air their concerns. Why ruin you life in order to do “the right thing”.
