billvon 3,120 #3 May 31, 2005 I suspect this will get worse as time goes on. Their untapped supplies of oil will give Russia the money to do things like this, and will also insulate them from external pressures.

The news article didn't mention what charges the defendant faced, the evidence against him, or any defense counter. This guy was found guilty of tax evasion. So is it the tax evasion problem you expect to get worse? Or are you saying that the man was innocent of the charges? If you believe the court found an innocent man guilty ,can you site any legal reasoning? Blues, Cliff
TheAnvil 0 #5 May 31, 2005 I agree, Bill. Do you think this Yuganskneftegaz imbroglio will have any effect on foreigners with investment capital who are considering putting it into Russia? Had I the cashola, I would be quite wary of doing so. What do you think the long term effects will be? Vinny the Anvil Post Traumatic Didn't Make The Lakers Syndrome is REAL JACKASS POWER!!!!!! No; indeed, Russia's Eurobond hit record highs today after the verdict came out. Russia is seen as one of the most undervalued markets out there, and I think that the collapse of Yukos won't devalue them much more. I think it will indeed deter investment into Russian oil stocks - but when you have the oil, that's not muich of a deterrent to development. Even a government-controlled oil industry that they hideously mismanage is going to net them an awful lot of money - and will put them in a position where oil-needy countries are inspired to overlook gross property and human rights violations. flifree 0 #7 May 31, 2005 good observation. let's not forget where putin's roots are....this guy was a mid level kgb floozie. feel free to correct me, but personal advancement through monetary gain is not of vital importance in the communist manifesto. i have absolutely ZERO proof that this oil tycoon did anything wrong....or anything right. however, it seems a big koinkydink that putin slapped down the first guy to make a statement to the world that YES you can escape the poverty and subsistence levels provided by the russian government. i doubt anyone outside of the russian government and that courtroom will ever know exactly what he did wrong if anything, beyond the shadow of a doubt. my gut feeling.....and that is all it is...is that putin feels as if it's 'his' oil and by god no one is going to get rich off of it without paying a penalty, in this case prison. Casurf1978 0 #8 May 31, 2005 I cant give you hard facts, but this trial and the dismantling of Yukos is all too convenient for Putin and his friends. For example the German chancellor spoke very little on this trial, yet two of the biggest German utility giants E.On and RWE already have stakes in Russia's energy sector and are eyeing former Yukos assets. Remember the German and Putin are pretty good buddies. Add to this that Mikhail Khodorkovsky might have had political ambitions and had over 15Billion USD worth of 'influence' in curropt Russia. What Putin and his croonies are doing is stupid beyond belief. Yukos owed 27billion in back taxes and it was auctioned off for less than 9 billion. At one point Yukos pumped more oil than Lybia, and now a state owned company will control 1/3 of Russias reserve. Putin doesnt care about Russia or its economy, all he cares about is staying in power and making himself and his friends very very wealthy
TheAnvil 0 #9 June 1, 2005 Interesting. I agree that the Russian market might be undervalued, but the mere fact that a large portion of an entire industry was renationalized in such a shady manner would trouble me were I an investor looking for places to sink my millions of $. If it can happen with one industry, then why not another? More trumped up charges and another Baikal Financial Group popping up and voila - $$$ gone to the Russian treasury. So true about the oil. I just think this whole thing so remniscient of Khruschev era Russia. Sad. Vinny the Anvil Post Traumatic Didn't Make The Lakers Syndrome is REAL JACKASS POWER!!!!!!
