This [IMHO] is a great result (and what a turn out ... about 70%!!

The EU, as it currently stands, is a drain on our bank accounts! Populated by a bunch of self-serving idiots.
and the Constitution would have given them even more power to rip us off.

Should there be an EU -- most definately (there is power behind numbers, you only need to look towards the US to see the truth in that) BUT we all need to maintain our own local ideintities and sovereignty.

As it stands at the moment, I'm with you ..... but I've just been watching the news and lots of people who phoned in, clearly had little idea of what the constitution is or says... most of their comments never mentioned it's content...
Some said we should vote YES ..... just because the French said NO:S
Other said the NO vote would put our Tony in a difficult position and so must be a good thing:S (Now, I'm NO fan of Tone, but the EU is MUCH bigger question than him. He is just a transiting blip in our history, but the EU is our future and so we MUST get it right)

Maybe the question is just too difficult for [some of] them>:(

First of all, most of them voted No because they are against Chirac and not against the EU constitution. A bad way to show this opinion - some people would say:A typical french behaviour.
The other thing is, with the denial of the new EU constitution, the treaties from Nice will stay active and even most of the oponents of the new constitution say, that this is worse.
So, IMO, a bad day for Europe.

P.S: The Turkey thing is another issue - how about a new thread on that?

I think the French voted no, out of a fear that the new constitution will pave the way for
even more illegal immigrants, an once in Europe will have a status of a third country person

Read chapter IV section 1 and 2 article III. 168

Oh......... and untill Turkey can admit to commiting genocide on the Armainians
and the murder of political prisioners, They have no place in Europe
The only reason the politicians and America want Turkey in Europe is to build air bases
when the politicians want something the wants of the public take a back bench.

Ahem. That would be 'Armenians.' ;)

And the Turkish government, a/k/a the Turkish Army general staff, remains recalcitrant on our genocide and has even strengthened its international campaigns to whitewash history, including by funding revisionist history professors at leading American and European universities.

Europe would poison its contemporary collective soul if it welcomed an unreformed and unrepentant Turkey into the family of member nations, assuming that Europe really does intend to purge itself of violence and thuggery and set a leading example for civilization.

Sorry Armenians, No offence ment

No offense was taken. Rather, I thank you for holding out for justice in choosing a government to represent you and your people. My forebearers were, throughout our history, not always so fortunate to have this choice ...

A future tragedy averted in Europe, perhaps.

SIX BURNT ALIVE AS PROTESTERS TORCH KFC OUTLET IN PAKISTAN
05.31.2005, 02:22 AM

KARACHI (AFX) - Six people were burnt alive when a mob protesting a suicide bombing of a mosque torched a Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) outlet in the southern city of Karachi, police said.

Police and firemen recovered the bodies of six KFC employees after an angry mob set the restaurant on fire late yesteday following a suicide attack on a Shiite Muslim mosque here that left five people dead.

'Their bodies were found during the search of KFC,' city police chief Tariq Jamil told Agence France-Presse.

Three attackers stormed the minority Shiite Madinat-ul-Ilm mosque in the middle-class Gulshan neighbourhood during evening prayers late Monday.

One of the assailants died in a gunbattle with police while the other blew himself up and the third sustained a serious head injury in a fall, Jamil said.

Hospital officials said the man is unconscious but in stable condition.

Police believe his survival could be the key to the investigation into suicide bombings.

Two worshippers and one policeman also died in the attack, while 21 people, four of whom were in a critical condition, were hospitalised.

Angry protesters went on the rampage after the attack, setting fire to two gas stations and a number of vehicles in addition to the KFC outlet.

The attack on the mosque came just three days after 19 people, most of them Shiites, died in a suicide bomb blast at a Muslim shrine near the capital Islamabad.

So when England votes NO what will your answer be, They voted no to chastise Blair.
Why has Blair moved the voting date forward to this year, Answer, To give the public less time to think
and to get them voting before they see other countries voting NO.

Maybe the French vote will show other goverments that people are not such the sheep they think they are.

I think Blair moved the date forward as he's under pressure to get out of no. 10 sooner rather thanb later. He needs a last hurrah before leaving and the Euro vote (be it a no or yes answer) is the perfect medium.

The other reason is simple politics. If the answers "yes" he wants that to his credit and can leave it as his legacy. If the answer's "no" it would be damaging to the govt. to leave the PM with such a major defeat - as it is he can leave and wipe the slate clean whereas if Brown takes us through the vote it would hang over Labour's head and give the Conservatives ground.

ps I think there's very little doubt that we will vote NO just as the French did.

i thnk it is utter BS to make a yes or no poll about the future constitution of the EU :|

and don't tell me you (or all the other voters in france or whereever the next poll will be) read the whole text and understood it in its full depth.
all the pro's & con's discussed are just the convenient parts that fit into the agenda of either side...

like it or not – from my understanding this whole european union thing has one purpose: forming a single body to be a counterpart to the other major players (be it in military or economy).

i think the idea of what a united europe could be, if the people living here only dared to have a vision, was sabotaged :|

as a sidenote. imagine the first states of the u.s. making a referendum about their constitution and one of them had rejected.... :S

No. It is not such bad day for Europe. It is time to re-consider what Europe's strategies and goals are. As I am working in political fields, I know from first-hand informations that not every party here is disappointed about France's "NON".

And BTW, Merkur, you are fully right: That "NON" was much more addressed to Chirac than to the EU.

No... not yet at least. There are 25 member states and the constitution requires unanimous ratification if it is to take effect from Nov 2006 as planned.

If only 20 out of the 25 ratify the constitution then there will be a summit to discuss what to do. So far the process has been 9 in favor and 2 against... although most of the 9 were by parliamentary vote as opposed to referenda.

They can't really start tinkering with the constitution now for two reasons. Firstly because it took years of argument to get the constitution as is to a point where all the member states representatives agreed upon it. Changing it now is a major task, a task Brussels won't want to undertake unless it really has to.

There's also the small matter of the 9 who have already ratified it. They'd be kinda pissed if the constitution was changed after they agreed to it. Effectively they'd probably have to re-ratify the document.

To get the constitution stopped or changed will take either another 4 "no" votes to guarantee killing it or changes at the summit stage once at least another 11 member states vote "yes".
