Desire to witness a fatality

Recommended Posts

Quote

I think he has. The point is that skydivers hold the witnessing of a fatality as a sort of a right of passage. The strange thing about it is that you are not allowed to wonder about that right of passage. Many people will quit jumping after witnessing a fatality. Those that stay around can say NSTIW and I got back in the plane because this is who I am. It seperates the tourists from the lifers in a sense. The caveat is that it comes at the expense of one of our own.

Good points. People are majorly bent because someone wants to discuss this taboo issue. The usual response to such tribal taboo violations is death. Denied that option, about the only thing thing the natives can do is to avoid discussing the issue and talk shit about the person who brought it up.

I can only speak for myself. I have openly discussed the circumstances of a skydiving death when something could be learned from it.

Personally, I think that a remark about wanting another person (possibly someone that I know) to die for their reasons is about the stupidest, most insensitive comment that I can imagine.

Only a sociopath is that unconcerned with the lives of others.

You'd really rather just stone him, wouldn't you? ;) Chill bro, it's just words.

Right... like a chick knows what skydiving is about.

Hey! Dog dude! Quick, over here! You're about to see a skydiving fatality :)

There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

:) Why? She's ok with me saying anything... They're just words... ;)

Besides, I never hit on intellectual chicks anyway, none of them can cook.

Ummm, I'm thinking of the papers I've read on humor as a vehicle for displaced agression.

Thanks for the personality snapshot, dude.

#1 may also give peace in certain circumstances.

Uh .. ok, how?
I can't fathom feeling a sense of peace after watching someone get mangled by a bus ... unless you mean a sociopath.
I grew up with a guy like that. Told a friend of mine he got a rush from killing people.

PM'd.

Not just sociopaths. Hope you agree.

You read? Papers and everything? Shucks, I'll be quiet after this. I didn't know you was a reader.

With your original post, you felt like you could sit in judgement over what is/isn't appropriate for me to be upset over? :o

If you want to, post a list of the "approved" topics that I can feel strongly about.

As far as "displaced" goes, no displacement. I was making fun of your attitude.

Been reading your previous posts. See the tactics, understand why they work for you ...don't care for them.

As we are not adding anything to the thread subject ...

This thread was not posted to start a discusion but rather to prove a preconcieved opinion.

It is the flaw in the logic which irks me, not the subject matter.

By the way, if you define the subject and provide proofs supporting your thesis we can debate the real issues. Please feel free.

Or maybe it was just a troll. Seven pages, not bad!

Hmmm... has a troll failed in its objective if its post results in a thoughtful and interesting discussion rather than flames and a locked thread? ;)

Well I read as far as post 12 and can't believe people don't see a troll when he shows up. Or one sick puppy. In either case let it drop foilks.

Maybe if you read more than 12 posts you would find an interesting debate had ensued.

Seeing a couple of the last posts that is possible but the initiator of the post is still gloating over his numbers.

Since trolls are mainly judged by the number of responses they get, the last thing a troller wants is a locked thread.

I think it's telling that the OP just threw the meat out and sat back.

I have been skydiving a few years and I have a thought that I would like to share.
This might sound irrational. I find myself a bit eager to experience the rush of a skydiving fatality firsthand. Maybe I am being a drama whore, but I am amazed at how death brings about a sense of fellowship in our sport.

People talk about accidents all the time on DZ.com and I am amazed at how it has become such an accepted topic. There are always the social gatherings like the funerals, and memorial dives dedicated to the victims.

Witnessing a skydivers death has truly become a prerequisite to nobility. I watch skydivers who have recently witnessed a fatality, they always seem to carry themselves with a quiet solemnity. Perhaps they think they have a notch in their belts because they had the pugnacity to continue despite ominous surroundings.

I would like to know if anyone out there feels the same way I do. Has witnessing a skydiving fatality become a “check” on the list of things we are suppose to experience as we become more seasoned skydivers?

Firsthand... is that like first person? If so, let me know when and where you're going to go in so I can go watch :o

I won't read thru the entie thread, but to scoff at someone's religion or ploitics is one thing, but if you want to witness a fellow jumper dying you're all fucked up.

To even infer that is sacreligious, so why do this? DO you want to be totally disowned by the community? This has got to be a joke.....

...Absolutely. Virtually everybody here has felt the need to point out that they have Been There, Done That And It's Not Pretty, Little Man...but on many a night around the bonfire after a few beers you will certainly have someone discuss a death, then someone else will bring up another one they were closer to...

Might this be that places such as the DZ and this website are among the few places where we can discuss this stuff with people who understand?

As a jumper with a sporadic history, I've gone months at a time not only without jumping but without interacting with other skydivers. In those early years I enjoyed those occasional barstool conversations with my whuffo friends, but it just wasn't the same as the DZ bonfire.

They'll ask us a question and get us started. No shit, there we are trying to explain, in a way they'll understand, all about flying like superman and diving down to dock on the formation, or flying under canopy watching the clouds, the sunset, etc.. Meanwhile, they still can't get beyond "What if the parachute doesn't open?"

There was one incident that happened at "my" DZ in the '80's. I read about it in PARACHUTIST. When I finally got to the DZ a few weeks later I asked one of the guys about it; he just said "Oh, Jon, I don't want to talk about it." For the regulars, they had already "shared" the event and it was becoming old news.

Cheers,
Jon
