kallend 2,175 #1 April 27, 2005 Here you go Anvil. What responsibility does the US Supreme Court bear for the institution of slavery in the Americas. Discuss in the light of the Dredd Scott case.... The only sure way to survive a canopy collision is not to have one.

lawrocket 3 #3 April 27, 2005 What responsibility did the Supreme Court have in the institution of slavery. Hmmm. I'd say they did not have anything to do with the start of slavery, since it was around before the SCOTUS was. As for Dred Scoot, Frederick Douglass himself stated after the decision, "my hopes were never brighter than now." The Dred Scott decision (which I also think is the worst decision ever by the SCOTUS) backfired. edited to add: I note that you titled your thread "in the Americas." Really, do you think the SCOTUS had anything to do with slavery in Haiti, Cuba, Brazil, etc? The decision did nothing more than lead to the Civil War and the 13th and 14th Amendments. The SCOTUS, like it or not, was responsible for the death of slavery. That "law of unintended consequences" thingy.... My wife is hotter than your wife. Lindsey 0 #4 April 27, 2005 I think it's pretty clear that the Supreme Court's decision in Dred Scott was partially responsible for ending slavery. Did the Supreme Court hear other cases involving slavery prior to Dred Scott? If not, I don't think one can say that the Supreme Court was responsible for slavery. What they said was that slaves were property, not citizens, and that they did not have the right to bring suit....or something along those lines. At the time, slaves WERE property legally. Am I incorrect? linz-- A conservative is just a liberal who's been mugged. A liberal is just a conservative who's been to jail
