Who are the British most like?

Recommended Posts

I'm curious we all know the stereotypes but leaving them aside, what do you think? Are Brits more like Americans, Europeans (I know we are part of Europe but i'm talking about our continental cousins) or are Brits more like Antipodeans (Aussies, Kiwis and South Africans, (For the purposes of this post Antipodeans cover South Africans as well)
Please comment on the reason for your choice.

Brits are a mixture of all of them. They are like Americans because, in general, they spout personal freedoms. They are also like Americans in that, from my experience, they view continental Europe and immigrants with distrust.

They are like Europeans in that they typically don't mind government control and socialism (right-wing is an insult there). They also are like Europe in that they view Americans with distrust.

They are like the southern hemisphere honkeys in that they have the crazy accent, and have a distrust of Europe and America...

[moved post to here]

If Americans were better educated, prettier, and smarter, then the Brits would be more like us.

If the Europeans didn't just give up their freedom and automony to an unelected, undemocratic government, the Brits would be more like the Euros.

Since the Aussies and the Brits are two of the few countries that have our backs most of the time, and that I don't know anything about SA or Kiwis anyway, I'll go with that the Brits are more like them.

What do you think??

You can have it good, fast, or cheap: pick two.

I quite like Lawrocket's post, if i had to choose i would identify closest to Antipodeans, but then I used to live in SA.

Is there such a thing as a British citizen? I thought we were all 'Subjects' at least we used to be. But for the purpose of this poll if you were born here or live here and regard yourself as British then your a Brit. It covers those within the British Isles. (If you're on the weather map, you're in!)

Whenever I go to the States I'm amazed at how different things are, Europeans also seem to have very different views on life, our cultures may be getting closer but it's always difficult to identify with someone who speaks a different lingo.

When I was in New Zealand though, I felt at home, its just such an easy place to live in. So I think I'll go with antipodean.:)

Subjects Hmm.

For the poll I'd have to say Ozzies or kiwis, I think we tend to relate more to people or races that understand our humour
an the Brits do tend to have a "special" sense of humour

You need another category, namely "a mix of the above, plus something unidentifiable".

There is no one quite like a Brit. But what is a Brit? Given that you cannot classify us, and that i believe we have approximately 50 demographic identities or thereabouts, you will be hard pushed for a reasonable answer to this question.

As a fellow Brit, however, i would say we are generally speaking a fairly tolerant, quick to jump to conlusions, tactful, mouthy, trustful, suspicious bunch, with bland taste buds, who like curry so much its now the national dish, who never win at any sports and always complain at that fact, bring back numerous golds from the Olympics including the 4 x100m title, and a double gold for one competitor and then can't stop banging on about it, quiet and reserved bunch with one of the rowdiest drinking and socialising sects in the world, shrinking violets with the highest teenage pregnancy figures in Europe, tongue biting and quiet football hooligans, with the best sense of humour ever invented, spawning nothing but quality comedies like the Carry On series, masters of musical productions who spawned the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Queen and dance music and are in love with Cliff Richard constantly, have a vast landscape of English culture and tradition that stretches back over a dozen or more centuries but where all our high streets look the same, and Morris Dancing still prevails, where we have the ability to laugh at ourselves and the stupidity of life, and simultaneously actually listen to what ever point Robery Kilroy is trying to make, in a serious, politician like manner and then actually vote for him and finally where we pride ourselves on being able to find virtually every national dish from around the world in the eating hot spots of London, which are almost worthy of a rival to New York, yet, when asked what the national dish of the country is will eaither reply "baked beans on toast/a fry up/roast dinner/curry and chips" and most likely be right.

So yeah, i would say the Brits are most like no one but themselves, a weird hodge podge of unclassifiable misfits really.

Sorry but i am not british! . Born and brought up in scotland. If asked i will reply i am scottish without thinking. That is just my national identity, it is nothing personal. Thats why we voted for develoution. The funny thing is the nationalist party who are pro total independence would then hand power to an unelected corrupt european parliament. Apart from that i would vote Antipodean. As Scots tend to emigrate and travel to settle down in almost every part off this planet.

Correct me if I'm wrong but although Scotland is devolved form Englands parliment it is still part of Great Britan, which like it or not makes you British. Not sure what would be worse the 'corrupt' European parliment or that eye sore that you've got up there that cost a bloody fortune! :P

As an expat Brit, I chose europeans. We can be stubborn, like the French. Classy, like the Italians. Fiercely proud, like the Spaniards and have a sense of humour, that is just BRITISH. There is no humour like Brit humour, the americans, aussies, kiwis just don't GET a lot of our jokes. :D:S

I find the aussies more like the yanks, yet the kiwis more like the poms. Dunno about Canadians, never really met that many of em and have not yet lived in Canada.

AND GO THE LIONS!!! (I got 4 tickets in the draw WAAAHHHOOOOOO!)
