Skyrad 0 #1 April 13, 2005 OK so maybe it wasn't a tip off by the CIA but with this level of accuracy I wouldn't be suprised if they were responsible. Father Ted's colleague as pope - what're the odds? The race is on to succeed John Paul II as pope and bookmakers are already getting in on the act. But not all the candidates are quite what they seem. According to the Washington Post, gamblers can back Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi of Italy at odds of 11 to 4. "Or they can take their chances on Father Dougal Maguire of Craggy Island, Ireland, a long shot at 1,000 to 1." But the Post's reporter was unaware of a key detail that, generous odds aside, would make canny bettors take a pass on Father Dougal. He is a fictional character. More accurately spelled McGuire, he appears in the hit British television comedy Father Ted, screened on the ABC in Australia. The show follows the antics of an eccentric group of Catholic priests on a small island off the west coast of Ireland. The clueless Dougal is described by Britain's Channel 4 television as "one of God's 'special' creatures" but even so, he is not thought likely to assume the throne of St Peter. http://www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200504/s1339054.htmWhen an author is too meticulous about his style, you may presume that his mind is frivolous and his content flimsy. jakee 1,596 #4 April 14, 2005 Nah, I don't think Dougal has enough experience to be Pope he's just too young. Father Jack Hackett would clearly be a better bet, an older man with a very diverse range of experience in the Church (Catholic schools, Nunneries etc) Girrrrls!!Do you want to have an ideagasm? While Fathers Creilly & Maguire were messing about with novelty sticky-tape dispensers, It was Father Jack (& the drinks trolley) who did the only sensible thing on a plane. Mike.
