Gravitymaster 0 #28 April 7, 2005 Quote>You left out the hybrid mower supporter. I didn't want to talk about the _real_ crazies. Off topic for a second: I read recently that the hybrid Honda Accord gets about 24 mpg average. I have an Acura TL with a 270 hp 3.2L V-Tech engine (6 cylinder) which is basically the luxury version of the Accord and I'm getting about the same average mileage. I think the Accord is about the same. Considering the hybrid has less trunk space than the Accord, do you still support the continued development of hybrids, or would it make more sense to just purchase a smaller all gasoline powered vehicle like the Honda Civic? Clearly some manufacturers have figured it out and some haven't. >Considering the hybrid has less trunk space than the Accord, do you >still support the continued development of hybrids, or would it make >more sense to just purchase a smaller all gasoline powered vehicle like >the Honda Civic? Not sure if "support of hybrids" has any meaning any more. I was pushing for them for a long time, hoping that once they became more widely available their obvious benefits (better performance using less gas) would win in the market. That's happened. Car companies are falling all over themselves to get more hybrids to market. Normal market forces will now drive development. without any need for me (or anyone) to try to push them. They are certainly not a complete solution to the energy problem, just a stopgap fuel-saving measure with several ancillary benefits. One benefit is that you no longer need a well-throttleable engines; this means engines like Atkins-cycle engines (as in the Prius) or a Stirling engine (which can burn anything) can be used as the prime mover. A second advantage is they can be used as 'pluggable hybrids' or partial electric vehicles. A car that does not _need_ gas to go ten miles to the store would be a huge benefit if gas prices really shoot up. People will be able to recharge their cars for 25 cents, and use it in electric mode for 90% of their driving. At least two groups I know are working on this, and Toyota has indicated interest in offering it as a future option. A third advantage is that this is driving the technology you need for a true electric vehicle. Saft can't keep up with battery demand, and the money being pumped into the battery industry is leading to more and more advances. Recently a new li-ion battery came out that can be recharged to 80% within 5 minutes. A li-ion electric car could get 150 miles per charge and could be recharged most of the way in 5 minutes, which is comparable to how long it takes to get gas at a gas station. But like I said, these things are now happening without having to make a fuss any more.

rehmwa 2 #46 April 8, 2005 Well, apparently Lawn Mowers burn real slow at first, then make a whooshing noise and burn fast for a bit, then burn slow for a long time again. Rubber tires stink when they burn. Man, the neighbor is really upset. He shouldn't have taken the mower out so soon after the snow melted. ...
