Insurgents attack Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison

WASHINGTON - A group of 40 to 60 insurgents attacked the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq late Saturday in a well-coordinated assault that inflicted 18 American casualties, U.S. military officials told NBC News.

This sucks major balls. Prayers to the families of the servicemembers.

I've been to Abu Ghraib several times. The compound is very secure and the only thing you can do is lob RGP's and mortars into the base or take shots at the guard towers.

I haven't read the article but I suspect the injuries were from indirect fire.

There is pretty much no way a small force could penetrate the compound. The setup there is very easily defendable.

The security force there should have been able to make short work of 60 attackers but there's nothing you can do to check incoming mortar fire unless you have counter-battery radar and morter teams of your own.

I've been mortared on several occasions in the vicinity of Abu Ghraib. Bad neighborhood.
