miked10270 0 #4 April 1, 2005 A little premature mate - from BBC news at 1900hrs GMT still alive but physical condition worsening. Meanwhile, we've stories of Moslems entering Catholic Churches & Cathedrals to join the vigil, and vigils being held in Sikh Temples. Then there's The Peoples Republic of China! Their Politburo has sent a "message of concern (& condolence). Pretty impressive given that they withdrew ALL relations with The Vatican in 1953. I think that Teh Pope's full title means "Chief Bridge Builder" (between man & God), and Karol certainly leaves that bridge (& others) in a fine state of repair. Mike. But it does sound like the ones circulating (about 1 hour ago) that he died are false. miked10270 0 #13 April 1, 2005 QuoteProbably an April Fools joke. There... Errr... Was the suggestion that The Pope was lying on his death bed, and every so often his eyes would flutter open and gaze at the clock. A few minutes ago he looked at the clock andtried to speak. A Monsignor leaned over him and the pope whispered; What time is it in The Aleutian Islands?" The Monsignor goes away to find out and comes back a few minutes later and says; It's five after mid-day, Holy Father. whereupon the pope leaps up and shouts; THAT'S how you pull an April Fools Trick! But in seriousness... Karol will be missed, and he'll be a hard act to follow. He's the man who brought Catholicism out of the vatican and made the Catholic Church more catholic. My prayers, like those of so many other non-catholics and even Athiests are with him as he passes on. Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. Even my own son - we are protestants, I personally do not believe in anything - was his fan, as in 87' the Pope touched his head. From this moment on I was sure nothing bad ever will happen to my boy. I still believe in this. My son is going to church, he's right now in our Cologne cathedral. Not me, I enjoy holidays in south Germany. But have to confess, I feel so sorry. That pope will be unforgottan. dudeist skydiver # 3105

sinker 0 #23 April 3, 2005 I haven't posted on DZ.com in a very long time, but I check back once in awhile to see how old friends are. And I just had to post about the passing of JPII. He was very very dear to me and my family. I know that many don't agree w/ his upholding of certain social doctrines of the Catholic Church, but no matter what anyone can say, he was always loving, always caring. I had the very good and humbling honor to attend a private Mass with him in his chapel in the Vatican in February of 2000. Afterwards, he met with each of us, about 1-2 dozen of us, and chatted briefly. He came up to me and said "ah, you are an American!" (Dear God! Is it that obvious?) I bowed and kissed his ring and, in that same second, from his ringed hand, he slipped a Papal Rosary into mine. He did that to everyone who was invited to attend his daily private Masses. I gave it to my wife, who was unable to be with me during that trip to Rome. We have since returned, just 4 months ago for Thanksgiving. This time we took our 3 kids. And we were lucky enough to attend a talk he gave during his Wednesday audiences. We were about 100 feet from him. This was before he became really ill. He had difficulty speaking then, but that didn't stop him from being with the people whom he so loved. Seeing him was always electrifying and inspiring. No matter what one's particular "moral code" is, viewing his life can't help but be inspired one to be more true to their ideals and more compassionate for other human beings. He did so much to unite the people of the world. He showed people how to live and how to die. Our world is much better because he was in it. And for me, I feel a deep emptiness and sadness that he is no longer here with us. He has left very big shoes to fill. RIP JPII -the artist formerly known as sinker
