jakee 1,596 #26 March 29, 2005 If you want to defend the church, or any other institution then go ahead and defend it, just don't say that we're not allowed to talk about it. The rules about gratuitous attacks are good, that kind of thing adds nothing to a debate. But it doesn't mean any criticism is verboten, without it there wouldn't be any debate. Also in the spirit of goodwill I'd like to apologise for hurting your feelings in the Terri thread. I didn't mean any offense but my comments obviously hit a sore spot, so I'm sorry.Do you want to have an ideagasm?

Zenister 0 #28 March 29, 2005 your position is near undefendable.. you are offended because YOU hold the Pope in high regard. However the (at this point hypothetical) question of his faith and its tenets as directly applied to a possible life support situation ARE clearly relevant. If we were discussing another public figure who's position on an related issue suddenly, very personally, affected him, would you be offended? For example if the Dali Lama were to suddenly take ill and be put on a respirator, would you find it offensive to question his condition in relation to his religious beliefs that clearly supports reincarnation thereby creates a contradiction of faith, by artificially sustaining this existence?? Such discussions might certainly fall into the realm of 'blasphemy' for true believers, but no believer is in no way forced to participate, and THIS is not a catholic church where your rules hold sway…... what IF the pope's condition deteriorates into a persistent vegetative state? should he be allowed then to join his lord peacefully? or should he be kept on this plane for as long as modern medicine can conceivably sustain him? You might not enjoy the manner in which the original question was phrased, but it is in no way offensive to an impartial observer, and that is the real standard.. 'impartial' those with a 'dog in the fight' will always find a reason to take offense, if it portrays their faith or position in a negative manner…. no matter what the subject honestly i'm offended by those who continually, and unjustifiably scream about PC speech and personal attacks in any form..... QuoteBillVon, please split this thread. why? it is still as on topic as any thread in the SC ever is...____________________________________ Those who fail to learn from the past are simply Doomed. jenfly00 0 #31 March 30, 2005 QuoteIf you changed it to any other religion, I think you'd get laughed at, not flamed. Feel free to try, though - this is Speakers Corner after all. As far as I've noticed, Blacks, Gays, and Women don't have institutionalized, mass marketed Dogma. _Am Hehe. Well, yes, they do actually. The catholic church, however, has been and is a repressive religion. It does amaze me anyone takes them seriously any more. Jen----------------------- "O brave new world that has such people in it". Travman 6 #32 March 30, 2005 Does anyone else think Weekend at Bernies when they see the pope? So its bad to kill yourself, but is it also bad to just let nature take its course?
tigra 0 #33 March 30, 2005 You want the thread split when it was pointless to begin with? The Pope's health has NOTHING to do the the church's position on suicide and very little in common (a feeding tube) with the Schiavo case. Or did you just want to start a thread about coincidences? I guess your citizenship hasn't kicked in yet, because you obviously haven't been annoyed by $harpton, Je$$e, and Kaw$i yet. If you had, you'd know for a fact that they do have "institutionalized, mass marketed Dogma."
