AndyMan 7 #1 March 29, 2005 To those whose local NPR affiliates pick up Chicago Public Radio's WorldView, todays show is "Canada as Utopia?". Canada recently had a hot streak during which the United Nations ranked it the most livable country in the world for seven straight years. Today on the program, Chicago Public Radio's Jerome McDonnell talks with the author of The Efficient Society: Why Canada Is as Close to Utopia as It Gets. The show is broadcast today at 1:00pm central. Otherwise, it will eventually get posted here: http://www.wbez.org/audio_library/wv_ramar05.asp#29__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. For those of you whose NPR affiliates don't pick up Worldview (I don't think many do since it isn't distributed via PRI), you can click into the live streaming audio at 1PM Central here: http://www.chicagopublicradio.org/audio_library/ram/livefeed/livefeed.ram (RealAudio). _Pm__ "Scared of love, love and aeroplanes...falling out, I said takes no brains." -- Andy Partridge (XTC)

DrewGPM 0 #5 March 29, 2005 I think the baby seals would disagree with the idea of Canada as utopia http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1513243;sb=post_latest_reply;so=ASC;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;;page=unread#unread

On the other hand, rats probably see Manhattan as a utopia, but sequoias probably prefer Canada. And we all know how a moose would vote.
CanuckInUSA 0 #7 March 29, 2005 QuoteI would live in BC though If/when my time in the USA does come to an end (I am after all nothing more than a temporary resident of the USA working as a technology worker through NAFTA), I will move to the lower mainland region of BC. I currently own a nice house in a nice affluent Calgary neighborhood. But the jumping season in Alberta is short and they only have Cessnas. So I think I'd be happier now in BC than I would in Alberta (I have no desire to live in any other Canadian province). As to which country is better, well one must live in a variety of places before one can subjectively make an educated decision (something that too many patriotic people fail to realize). To spew crap about places you've never lived in is just showing one's ignorance (this is a generic comment totally unrelated to what the GTAVercetti said). Fundamentally there is little difference between life in the USA and life in Canada. The two countries share a similar history and share similar economies (and are each other's largest trading partners). I have noticed that I get paid more in Colorado and I pay less taxes. But it all evens out since my cost of living in Colorado (including things like health care) is way higher than what I would be paying up in Canada. And since the US dollar has taken a nose dive, saving money on certain commodities in the US is no longer the bargain they used to be. So the bottom line for me as to why I'm still here rests in the fact that I think Colorado has some of the best weather anywhere in North America and well the jumping is better down here than it is up there. But rest assured, many Canadians live very productive and happy lives in a country which isn't as obsessed with money, war and religious political agendas. Oh but I would like to add that I think North America is in deep trouble for future generations. Jobs are being outsourced to other regions of the world and unless North Americans can figure out ways to save their economic viability, we will become 3rd world nations with very few haves and too many have nots with no job prospects outside of joining the military and going off to fight and die in wars to make the haves even richer. Try not to worry about the things you have no control over

FallRate 0 #10 April 2, 2005 Speaking of Canada, someone told me the other day that I currently live north of 70% of Canada's population (Thief River Falls, MN). I don't know if it's true, but thinking about it makes me want to turn my furnace up...and move...soon. FallRate
mccurley 1 #11 April 3, 2005 The majority of Canada's population live from Toronto to Montreal all along the north shore of Lake Ontario and the St Lawerance river Have a look at a map, the southern part of Ontario below Windsor/Detroit is about as far south as Northern Califoria.Watch my video Fat Women http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRWkEky8GoI
