cvfd1399 0 #1 March 21, 2005 "SAN ANTONIO -- A Schertz police officer escaped serious injury late Thursday despite a hail of gunfire from two weapons allegedly fired by a 48-year-old Comal County man he had stopped for speeding. Schertz Police Chief Stephen Starr said Officer Richard Kunz pulled over Michael Kennedy for speeding on north Interstate 35 near FM 1103 at 11:30 p.m. when the officer noticed Kennedy was carrying a handgun. Seconds later, Kennedy then allegedly took out an assault-style rifle out of his Toyota Corolla and emptied 30 rounds from an AK-47 and then from a .9mm handgun, Starr said. Kunz, hidden behind his cruiser, managed to fire off 16 shots, three of them hit Kennedy in the back and neck. Kennedy was listed Friday in serious condition at Brooke Army Medical Center. Kunz was not hurt but his patrol car was riddled with 30 bullets. They inserted wooden dowels in the bullet holes to show the trajectory of all the bullets it is amazing to see how the bullets went all over the seat. Uploaded pics to my site of the patrol unit

So, the accusations should be coming out any time now. This officer shot the suspect in the back. Even worse, he hid from view when he did it. My wife is hotter than your wife. cvfd1399 0 #5 March 21, 2005 I would hope not after 30 shots from a rifle and multiple shots from a handgun if the suspect turned his back on me and proceded back towards his vehicle he would be shot. I would claim that after showing this type of aggression I thought the suspect was going to his vehicle for more weapons or ammo.
Kennedy 0 #6 March 21, 2005 It was an ambush! It was a setup! They're framing him so they could murder him! He was a nice boy! Are we done with that? Good. Seriously, good for the officer for saving his own life and doing his best for everyon else on the scene.witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*

From the article: Quote Kunz was placed on administrative leave with pay while the investigation is ongoing. Anyone know if this is standard procedure for such an event? I would assume so, but I wasn't sure.
Kennedy 0 #8 March 21, 2005 I can't speak 100% for his department, but it's just about universal that officers are placed on leave or desk duty while shootings are investigated. (it's as much to help the officer as to check him out)witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
AggieDave 6 #9 March 21, 2005 Quotewhen i'm going over my routine for my class and i'm distracted, i believe i have just as much right to complain as the next person. I can't think of a single department in TX that doesn't put an officer on admin leave to investigate a shooting. It really is for the officer to get away and to get some help from a psychologist that the deptartment uses, since a shooting, even a clean shoot does mess with your head. I'm going to say that the officer's training and reaction time is what saved his life, luck played a small part, but this proves that training and practice, practice, practice, practice will create the desired response. Just like muscle memory training for EPs in skydiving.--"When I die, may I be surrounded by scattered chrome and burning gasoline."

Either the criminal bungled his choice of weapons or the journalist bungled his description of weapons?
Kennedy 0 #11 March 22, 2005 What, you expect news sources to get it right? HA! (yeah, I noticed the point as well; some people just can't differentiate between caliber and millimeter, nevermind gauge, no matter how many times you tell them)witty subliminal message Guard your honor, let your reputation fall where it will, and outlast the bastards. 1*
cvfd1399 0 #12 March 22, 2005 Watched a study from the FBI a month ago whole doing inservice training about bullet size V.S bullet placement. Short story is that shot placement is more important overall. There were guys shot at close range with .45 cal bullets 7,8,9 times in the chest and gut, but lived. Then there were officers shot in places like the aorta of the heart ,head, and spine and killed by a single .22 bullet.
