billvon 3,111 #1 March 17, 2005 Bush Announces New Appointments, Amid Opposition from Democrats JFN News 3/17/2005 WASHINGTON A week ago, President Bush announced the nomination of Undersecretary of State John Bolton to the position of U.S. ambassador to the United Nations. "The president and I have asked John to do this work because he knows how to get things done. He is a tough-minded diplomat," Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said. Bolton drew fire from Democrats in 1994 when he said at a Federalist Society forum that "there is no such thing as the United Nations." Since then, several officials from U.N. Security Council member states expressed astonishment that Bush would name someone they believed had a known antipathy toward the United Nations, according to a Reuters report. Rice stated that she believed the apparent contradiction in his goals would actually work in favor of the US. "It's like the Palestinians having to negotiate with [Israeli Prime Minister] Ariel Sharon. If you have a deal, you know you have a deal," she said last week. This week, the President announced several new appointments to continue this trend. The first announcement, made Thursday morning, was that Ken Lay would replace the ailing Alan Greenspan as chairman of the Federal Reserve. He intoroduced Lay was the ideal candidate for chairman, given the administration's recent push for private accounts for Social Security. "Now that most people will have much of their retirement money invested in the stock market, we need a man like Ken Lay to push the markets to new heights," Bush said during Thursday's press briefing. "He has the sort of experience caring for people's pensions that we need in this administration." The next nomination came shortly afterwards, when he announced that Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy would head up the Department of Transportation. Kennedy, long respected for his experience with bridges and other infrastructure, accepted the job shortly after the announcement. "I am proud to accept this position, and I believe my experience with traffic incidents, bridge design and DWI laws will be an invaluable asset to this administration," he said in a press briefing that followed the President's announcement. The final nomination announcement on Thursday was that the recently-convicted Scott Peterson would head up the new Department of Family Services. "Scott has shown a willingness to take strong action when it comes to family planning, and he understands both sides of the argument when it comes to the sensitive issues facing families today," the President said during the same briefing. Some democrats expressed reservations about how convicted murderer would handle the criticism that could dog his nomination, but a republican spokesman pointed out that Peterson could actively deal with such criticism. President Bush has not yet announced his nomination to head the new Department of Child Welfare, but administration officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, have indicated that performer Michael Jackson will be nominated. An administration official was quoted as saying "there's no one better with children, and his popularity will make it easy for him to garner the public support we need to keep our children safe, healthy and well educated." Bush withdrew his final nomination, Timothy McVeigh to head the Department of Homeland Security, when he discovered that McVeigh was no longer available. Democrats were relieved when they heard the nomination had been withdrawn. "McVeigh certainly has the experience to handle the position, but given how easily he was caught, I didn't think he had the wiles to handle the political part of the job," said a Democratic spokesperson on Thursday.
