Trying to drive this barge back into the channel it started on (well, sort of).

I was at a lecture about Thomas Jefferson this weekend; in it, the speaker said that Jefferson didn't really think much of Patrick Henry. So, well, I went looking (after all, I can't just believe him can I?).

Here is a website with a short bio of Henry. While a passionate speaker, and committed to the sort of liberty that many here would probably decry, he doesn't really seem to have been a model citizen of anything. Really. So maybe sometimes we can take the message without seeing exactly who the messenger is.

I just thought it was interesting. The men (and they were pretty much exclusively men) who formed this country were a very diverse group, who disagreed vehemently and sometimes violently on the direction they thought it should take.

What exactly makes us think it's taken the direction that any of them would have thought was right?

I did like JFK's quote about Jefferson, though. When he had a group of Nobel prizewinners at a White House reception, he said "I think this is the most extraordinary collection of talent, of human knowledge, that has ever been gathered at the White House-with the possible exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone."
