I suspect that this comes down to a case of; "While you may trust yourself, do you trust others".
Personally, I believe that I am capable of living within the basic moral guidelines of society without the "Aid" of a judicial system. I keep within the "10 Commandments", do not intentionally harm others, and pay my taxes as required and on time. I am honest.
However. my honesty would be quickly eroded in the face of knowledge that others without my degree of honesty were benefiting at my expense.
And therein lies the rule of law. Perhaps it's not a guarantee of justice, but it IS a guarantee of a level playing field for all participants.
There is comfort in the declaration: "Die Gesetz ist Die Gesetz!"

That's precisely how I'd see it. People individually would tend to take the right path, but it takes only a small number of freeloaders to break society.

... or too much alcohol, some white powder, crack or similar - and most of law-and-order-loving folks will forget who they are (or were). Or just f. e. take the jalousy on the neighbour: His grass is greener than yours, so 'you' simply eliminate him to take over his property.
The danger is to be found deep inside a person itself. You'll never know how you would react on extremely stressed situations.
Or do I understand something here completely wrong?

Thank you so much, Bill.
Without your kind assistance, I would not be able to follow this thread for one single step.

For instance....let's say someone has severely hurt you or someone close to you.....not physically, but let's say perhaps you're a husband that catches your wife cheating on you.
Isn't that what women are suppose to do?

I think people may be a lot nicer if they thought that their actions had more severe consequences.
One of the big criticisms that I have of "civilization" is that it gives rights to others while taking them away from others.
Example - a person who tries to irritate another person intentionally in a verbal fashion. The excuse is that "it is only words".
Example 2 - people who use the court system to steal.
Example 3 - people who use stock/accounting swindles (like Enron) to steal millions more than anyone ever could with a knife.
Without laws, one of the thousands who lost their life savings to the Enron CEO would walk up to them and just whack them. That would seem fair, I think.

Former CA Gov Gray Davis would beat them to it, though.

And a worker at a veteran's hospital would walk up and whack Bush for cutting funding and costing him his job. Then someone would whack him for whacking the president.
Anarchy is a fun theory to bat around when it comes to sociology, but not one that works in practice. Larry Niven's "Cloak of Anarchy" (short story) takes a look at anarchy both in the absence and presence of law; it's an interesting read.

Would you kill a man for building a lawnmower Bill?
Great story BTW...
The real problem w/ anarchy is it very quickly becomes a situation where the strongest take control as there is no balance of "law" against their strength.
Many real world examples are also available: Mogadishu, Afganistan ...
