This guy is actully a danger to himself, sufferring from an incurable mental illness which means he never feels full, always feels starving. He is slowly eating himself to death. He is in effect committing suicide (slowly).

Now whever we lock people up who are a danger to themselves is a the question. If you know someone is going to shoot themselves do you lock them up to stop them? I don't know.

Everyone can rest assured that they won't lock people up for being too thin!:P

Thin people are too expensive to lock up compared to fat people 'cos they'd have to build the cells wiff the bars A LOT closer together!:S;)

He was taken for mental health treatment, not locked up in jail. Prader-Willi is a physical condition, an abnormaility of chromosome 15. It is not simply a lack of ability to tell when full, it is a pathological uncontrollable need to eat. Individuals with PW also are short and have some degree of mental retardation. It was unclear from the article if the person truly had PW syndrome or not. If not, then mental health involuntary admittance is appropriate (such as with anorexia or bulemia, a mental illness leading to self destruction). If he does indeed have PW, then appropriate medical care should have been given from birth (and there are very good resources in the UK for this) and treated from a medical stance to begin with. Locking cupboards and refusing money for food as his mother was doing is not the appropriate treatment for PW. Hopefully his condition will be managed now, regardless of which facet he is dealing with.

This is so, so wrong, in my opinion. Because a person is eating himself to death is not sufficient cause to commit a person to a hospital against his will. We do many things that shorten our life spans....smoking cigarettes, engaging in high-risk activities of any sort, failure to exercize....many, many things. Some people even don't follow their doctors recommended treatments for things like heart disease, diabetes, etc. Any of these could be construed as dangerous to self.

There was a thread not too long ago about something similar to this. It's frightening.

They should just unhook that fat fuck from the gravy IV that he's clearly attached to and just lock him up so that he doesn't go outside and frighten normal folks.

I don't care if he has genuinely got Prader Willi syndrome. Any person who is not comprised solely of ham can work out their calorific intake for the day, weight themselves regularly and look in a mirror. If he hasn't learned to associate the fact that he's a buttertroll with his constant stuffing of his pie hole, then he deserves to be locked up just being and idiot, especially if he's kicking down locked doors to get food.

I hope that didn't make me appear heartless......

c'mon guys, I expect better from you.

No one here knows the full facts... all we do know is that papers never report everything... and they don’t always get things right.

What if this guy was mentally handicapped and refusing treatment? Sure we here can all choose to skydive, but we have the mental capacity to make that choice... what if we didn’t? Would it be right to stick us on a plane?

Now we don't know if this chap has mental problems or not... but the fact that he was sectioned under the mental health act demonstrates that at least two physicians did believe he could have been so mentally disabled that he was a danger to himself.

In circumstances where a mentally disabled person is doing something which causes harm to themselves... yes I think we as responsible members of the community have a duty to act to stop them from harming themselves. If that was the case here that would be no different simply because it’s food that’s killing him. If they are mentally disabled of course.

Why have I been speaking in the past tense? Well see The Sun is not exactly what I’d call a reliable news source. See this guy was sectioned 1 week ago and went home on Monday when doctors said he wasn’t mentally disabled. They had their suspicions when he put on 14 stone after leaving a boarding school specializing in the treatment of his syndrome. When he became abusive and walked out of the care home he was working with doctors alerted social services.

The Sun article leads with the fact that he was carted off and imprisoned for a month... truth is this guy was in hospital for a week while people tried to help him out.

Another interesting news article on the front of the Sun today was that Tom Cruise was dating Miss Viagra. Sadly the Sun sat right next to the Mirror who’s front page article was that Tom Cruise was dating Penelope Cruz... hahahaha, guess newspapers aren’t always right.

Aussies are fatter than Americans
By Sharri Markson
November 21, 2004

THE average Australian woman is a size 16 and weighs 8kg heavier than her American counterpart, according to authoritive new international research.

Australian men are also 3kg heavier than American males, the joint study by the University of Adelaide and US researchers shows.

The findings were recently presented at the American Standards and Testing Materials Conference and obtained exclusively by The Sunday Telegraph.

They contradict the widely held view that the United States is the world's most overweight country and they have led the Australian Medical Association to warn: "We are eating ourselves to death."

Women are now two dress sizes larger than they were in the 1960s, the National Size and Shape survey of 60 body dimensions of 1400 Australians, showed.

AMA vice president Dr Bill Glasson said the report highlighted the growing obesity problem.

"The average Australian thinks that Americans are bigger but our country faces a huge problem," Dr Glasson said.

"We are not getting enough exercise.

"People don't have to be skinny but obesity and the cost of subsequent diseases to our health system is huge."

Australian women are 5cm bigger around the bust, 8cm larger around the waist and 4cm wider on the hips than American women.

Australian men are 3kg heavier than their American counterparts, with a chest circumference that is 6cm larger and a waist circumference 2cm wider.

Fashion analyst Daisy Veitch said the findings reveal a flaw in the clothing industry.

About 50 per cent of Australian women do not fit into the clothes sold in mainstream stores.

"Women in Australia have difficulty finding clothes that fit properly," she said.

"The new Australian figure is pear-shaped and less slimlined than it was 20 to 80 years ago.

"Manufacturers are basing their clothes on old standards, not on today's women's curvy shape."

Lucy Dunwell from Frenchs Forest is a size 16: the shape of the new average Australian female.

But the 19-year-old model for the Biggals agency said she had trouble buying clothes that fit her figure.

"Often there are not many clothes in my size; most stop at size 14," Dunwell said.

"Shopping can get frustrating, especially when there are dresses I like that only come in smaller sizes."

The Australian survey was conducted over a six-month period in 2002.

The anatomical science team at the University of Adelaide then spent two years analysing and collating the body dimension data.

The same method of measuring body dimensions was used in the American study of 4000 people.

The results will be published in the international scientific journal, Journal of Human Ecology.

University of Adelaide head of anatomical science, Professor Maciej Henneberg said the survey results showed Australia was a nation of "healthy, cheerful, size 16 women".

"Australian women are heavier than American women by a few kilos, but it's not a major concern," Prof Henneberg said.

"I think the reason is there is a socio-economic difference. On average Australians are more affluent than Americans.

"The survey showed one third of women are obese and there is concern over this. However, size 16 women are happy and healthy."

"The Sun article leads with the fact"

That has got to be a first!

I hate the Sun>:(, only one page worth looking at.:);)

Brits will know what I'm talking about, on both of the above statements.
