swastika

Recommended Posts

Remember the incident that took place in England two or three weeks ago? One of the young princes appeared publicly in a Nazi uniform wearing a swastika on his sleeve. Everybody was indigant. Some people suggested that swastika should be delegalized. Hinduist community strongly opposed to that idea. In their culture swastika's always been a symbol of luck. It was as late as in XX century when the Nazis used it. What do you think - should swastika be delegalized anyway?

The Swastika is actually found in several cultures on the planet and has been in use long before hitler and the nazi's used it. Just last week I was in an Afghan village and several of the older women had Swastika tatoos on their forehead, cheeks and chin among other tats. For many cultures it is positive symbol and has no negative conotations when used.

Personally, I think that the Swastika should be legal.

It wasn't the symbol which was evil. The regime which adopted it had evil facets.

The Nazi Regime would have been the same under the Swastika as it would have been under a design of "Stars & Stripes" or various "Crosses & Saltires" or "Hammers & Sickles"!

In short, blame the regime and the circumstances which made it attractive to people.... Not the Graphic!

Symbols have meaning. That's the property that makes them useful. Can't just wake up one day and have everyone agree that a swastika is nothing more than some angled lines.

Hi Tonto,

I don't know if you ever saw the series: "The Nazis - A warning from history"? It was made by the BBC in 1997 & I think it's available on disc & tape etc...

It makes for "interesting" viewing.

It was precisely because the swatstika is such an ancient and mystical symbol that the Nazis used it. Hitler and his gang were hung up on myths, astrology and all that stuff and they knew the power it can have on people's imaginations. I mean if you can put the Nazis atrocities aside for a moment, it really is a COOL looking symbol.

Aside from Hindus, American Indians also used the swatstika. There are some pre 1930's National Geographics with pictures of Indians who have swatstika patterns in the beadwork on their native clothing.

It's such a shame that the Nazis had to ruin the reputation of such an ancient symbol.

How would you "delegalise" it?
Censor books, films, archive material....I don't think so.
Ban it from public display? Nah sounds a bit like 1984.
Ban people from wearing it? See above.

Even if it were banned, people who associate themselves with Nazism will simply adopt a new symbol, similar but not exact.
see a couple of attachments, one fictional, one all too real.
Then if you ban 'similar' symbols, there is a whole new can of worms, such as the Isle of Man's 3 legged symbol.

As much as I despise extreme right wing racism, and even bigotry in any form, these people have as much right to express their political beliefs as the more mainstream political parties do.

Besides its all a bit of a storm in a teacup as far as I am concerned, a kid made a poor choice of outfits for a fancy dress party, I bet he won't make the same mistake twice.

So if some evil ruler comes to power and adopts the crucifix and the star of david as two of his main symbols, are you going to say Christians and Jews should be ok with a ban on their symbols in the country where the evil guy took power?

And what would Ozzie do with all that jewelry.B|

Perhaps the important question is: "Would Ozzie actually notice his jewellery being carted away if it were confiscated?"

I think we should discuss this in depth...:S
