livendive 8 #3 February 2, 2005 Watching Bush speak is like watching senior citizens copulate. Given that it's a canned speech with no immediate significance (hopefully!), I'll just catch the highlights after the fact. Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" It stands for "Sod Off & Take up..." followed by a "K" for knitting, a "G" for golf, a "F" for fishing, "B" for ballet etc... Mike. quade 4 #5 February 2, 2005 Absolutely. It's high drama no matter who is giving it. Besides which, if you don't watch it, you might have a difficult time knowing what was said in it. At least through the current Administration's web site whitehouse.gov. Don't believe me? Try searching for previous State of the Union speeches by Bush 43 at whitehouse.gov and you might find at least one of them pretty hard to find. I wonder why?quade - The World's Most Boring Skydiver

Hey great idea Dave, don't listen to what HE says wait till afterwards and let someone else TELL you what he said. Pick the right channel and you can make sure and have the "spin" on it that suits your pre determind idea.

If anything particularly interests me, the transcript will be almost immediately available and I can go to it for exact quotes. FYI - These kinds of speeches aren't really about what "he" has to say anyhow, as much as what his speechwriters and handlers have to say. If he wanted to tell us what *he* thinks, he'd write his own speeches or better yet speak freely without a teleprompter. Nothing against him personally, that's just the way politics work. Hey Dave After "reading" (I guess) the SOTU do you really believe that this speach wasn't what Bush thinks. Sure uses a teleprompter, I guess he "could" just speak off the cuff, but why? If you have to give a speach do you not practice it? Does he have help with the speach - sure. I can change the spark plugs in my car but if it's more than that I'll get some help. He's not talking to a local Rotary club. Bush has his problems but I just don't see one as him being a puppet for "handlers" Fortson
penniless 0 #10 February 3, 2005 So after warning "don't let anyone mislead you" Bush proceeded to make claims about Social Security that are unfounded and contradicted by the SS trust fund trustees. He made unfounded claims about the cost to the economy of malpractice lawsuits, and he mislead about the size of his budget cuts by excluding all military expenditures. Oh well, par for the course. livendive 8 #11 February 3, 2005 QuoteBush has his problems but I just don't see one as him being a puppet for "handlers" QuoteThe principle here is clear: a taxpayer dollar must be spent wisely, or not at all. Yeah, fiscal responsibility has been Bush's claim to fame. Quotewe must free small businesses from needless regulation and protect honest job-creators from junk lawsuits. Justice is distorted, and our economy is held back, by irresponsible class actions and frivolous asbestos claims Is that Bush talking? I think I see puppet strings. QuoteI submitted a comprehensive energy strategy that encourages conservation, alternative sources, a modernized electricity grid, and more production here at home, including safe, clean nuclear energy. My Clear Skies legislation will cut power plant pollution and improve the health of our citizens. Bush neither understands nuclear energy, nor environmental protection. The puppet strings in this case lead to huge companies with experience in nuclear power plant construction and operation, as well as coal-fired utilities and other major point source polluters who don't want to update their pollution prevention systems." Quote"Soon I will send to Congress a proposal to fund special training for defense counsel in capital cases, because people on trial for their lives must have competent lawyers by their side." LOL! Quote"The United States has no right, no desire, and no intention to impose our form of government on anyone else." (followed later by) "We are in Iraq to achieve a result: A country that is democratic, representative of all its people, at peace with its neighbors, and able to defend itself." (and) "Our men and women in uniform are fighting terrorists in Iraq, so we do not have to face them here at home." Well those are reasons I don't remember hearing a couple years ago. And you guys called Kerry the flip-flopper? Which reason was it? Quote"And to the Iranian people, I say tonight: As you stand for your own liberty, America stands with you." LOL! Quote"A young woman in Baghdad told of waking to the sound of mortar fire on election day, and wondering if it might be too dangerous to vote. She said, "hearing those explosions, it occurred to me -- the insurgents are weak, they are afraid of democracy, they are losing. ... So I got my husband, and I got my parents, and we all came out and voted together." Yeah, I'm sure that's exactly what she said. And do you honestly think he came up with this one on his own? QuoteThe liberation of Europe from fascism was only a dream -- until it was achieved. The fall of imperial communism was only a dream -- until, one day, it was accomplished. Our generation has dreams of its own, and we also go forward with confidence. The road of Providence is uneven and unpredictable -- yet we know where it leads: It leads to freedom."
