rmsmith 1 #2 February 1, 2005 It's about time, but it should be at least a $250k death benefit!
Trent 0 #3 February 1, 2005 Long overdue... good to hear it is on the agenda. One side effect of this would possibly be that it will get our troops the basic safety equipment they'll need and better medical care, since it will be much cheaper to keep them alive than to pay the benefits. Not that it's the right reason for getting them better care and equipment, but at least it's a start.Oh, hello again!
livendive 8 #4 February 1, 2005 Cool beans. The death benefits have been woefully inadequate for a very long time. This is definitely a step in the right direction. Just to stir the pot though, do you think they'll word the bill such that the benefits are payable to a surviving "domestic partner"? Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!" Casurf1978 0 #5 February 1, 2005 Awesome. Just curious though, does that money get taxed. IMO it shouldn't.

Blues, Dave Hi Dave Sounds like the life insurancebenifit hadn't been increased for a very very long time Your question about the "domestic partner issue" can be a whole new can of worms and end up being a political football, that will just end up delaying the past due increase. Wonder what the policy is on private life insurance if one partner dies? It will be interesting to see how the feds deal with this issue compared to private industry. R.i.P. It will be interesting to see how the feds deal with this issue compared to private industry. Private life insurance is easy...there's no requirement that the named beneficiary be a spouse or dependent child. If I'd died last year, my girlfriend would have gotten almost $600k, and if I die tomorrow, my mom will. I suspect the life insurance being provided in this package is run similarly, so that shouldn't be a concern. Given that, the only thing at issue is the proposed $100k death benefit (currently $12k). If worded anything like the DOE employee death benefit ($150k for those who die or have died as a result of having worked with radioactive material in support of DOE missions), it will only be awardable to a surviving legal spouse or dependent child(ren).
