Children Pass Out, Toddler Unconscious When Family Grills Indoors

POSTED: 8:25 am EST January 21, 2005
UPDATED: 10:57 am EST January 21, 2005

WILTON MANORS, Fla. -- A Wilton Manors family cooking hot dogs on a charcoal grill inside their home got sick from carbon monoxide poisoning.

Wilton Manors police Sgt. Pete Bigelsen said Angeline Jean-Francois moved the cooking indoors because their power was shut off earlier Thursday. Jean Cayemitte said his wife was cooking in a laundry room in the rear of their home.

Cayemitte noticed his 2-year-old son, his other three children and his wife were all having breathing problems and called the police.

Bigelsen said the 2-year-old was unconscious but was resuscitated. The other three children fainted when they walked outside.

The family was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that can cause sudden illness and death. The CDC offers the following tips to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning:

*
* Never use a gas range or oven to heat a home.
* Never use a charcoal grill, hibachi, lantern, or portable camping stove inside a home, tent, or camper.
* Never run a generator, pressure washer, or any gasoline-powered engine inside a basement, garage, or other enclosed structure, even if the doors or windows are open, unless the equipment is professionally installed and vented.
* Never run a motor vehicle, generator, pressure washer, or any gasoline-powered engine outside of an open window or door where exhaust can vent into an enclosed area.
Never leave the motor running in a vehicle parked in an enclosed or semi-enclosed space, such as a closed garage.

We read the first sentence "Barbacue inside the home":S.

My guess they don't watch/listen to the news or read a newspaper.

I know they broadcast a warning here every winter or during a wide power outage.

Hmmm:S Florida, hurricans, power outages:o

That is really sad. It said their power had been turned off which I'm assuming because they were behind on payment which implicates financial struggles. It is amazing that sometimes people don't have common sense about things but some people just don't. Putting her in jail would do more harm to her family.. I'm sure her toddler would be horrified if her mommy was taken away.
She doesn't deserve to be punished..she was just trying to feed her kids and didn't know better. Stupid? yes.. but I have a hard time judging people without knowing what they are going through.

I would however, have thought that the husband would have known better. He knew she was cooking and he was just as clueless as well. Scary.

Remember the thread about evolution ?

Well, here's it's twin brother Darwinism at work.

No point in getting mad. There is an inexhaustible supply of dumb people. This is nature's way of weeding them and their chromosonally challenged offspring out of the gene pool.

Sorry but I don't give a rusty fuck what sort of problems she and her family were having, this goes above and beyond.

Any idiot knows not to grill indoors unless its an electric range type grill (i.e. Foreman grill).

As for her punishment, who knows, that's not my department, I don't think she should be allowed to get away clean and free. She nearly killed her 2 year old.

Just stating that was why she was cooking with the grill instead of on the stove. Her kids were hungry.

Obviously any idiot doesn't. Do you think she was intentionally trying to kill her family?

Then what should her punishment be? Classes in safe grilling?? I understand the ramifications of what happened and it's awful that it happened but putting her in jail would not be the right thing to do. That would only hurt the kids.

Like I said... her husband was obviously just as clueless. He allowed it.

That's all fine and dandy, BUT she was grilling inside.

Jail? I'm not that callous...Istill stand by my original statement to simply kick her in the head.;):P

Amazing how the thread has progressed:

From all I have read, I think you are suggesting that maybe there should be a law - since you suggest that she should be punished andperhaps go to jail.

BUT, a lady here in Zephyrhills last year shot her husband 6 times through a closed door, thinking it might have been an intruder, also did not go to jail or suffer any punishment. Everyone around here seemed to think that was an unfortunate accident, but never held her responsible in any way.

So gas your kids, go to jail?

Shoot a family member and get nothing?

People do all kinds of stupid things, first, the cooking inside, but at least they have enough sense to call the police.

Maybe the laundry room had an open door or somethign liek that- the article does nto go into that detail. LOTS of poeple made similar mistakes during the hurrincanes down here

Isn't that 2 stupid things? The second being calling the police ... if the kids were unconscious - would you call for an ambulance first?

How fucking harsh and judgemental, more like it.

Like others said, you have no idea what the entire situation was. Most laundry rooms are right off the garage. They could have had the door open, thinking there was enough fresh air coming in. They didn't have power, it could have been raining which would have made it so they couldn't have cooked outside. Their power got turned off which makes one believe they were having hard times. Hot dogs could have been the only thing they had in the house to feed a starving child. A good mother will try to make her child comfortable.

Yes, she made a potentially deadly mistake, but it was still a mistake. I bet she's learned from it and I bet she never does it again. I hardly think she needs a kick in the head. The guilt she'll have from almost killing her child will be with her the rest of her life.

Gas ranges still work in a power outage, and boiled hot dogs are just as edible as grilled wieners.

Also, throw some beans in with the dogs instead of water, slice up the dogs and an apple if you have it, and you have a very tasty, pretty nutrious meal.

I saw two things in the article. Power turned off and French names from an area north of Ft. Lauderdale.

My guess? Probably sugarcane cutters from Haiti with no money or education.

That said, I just moved out of an apartment in Tampa last year. They let you know that it is illegal to use a open flame grill on your porch. It is a $500 fine. My neighbors in the next building did it anyway.

It seems like having an open fire under an overhang would be obvious too. Nice neighborhood and educated people doing ignorant things.

You're right. Gas ranges are an upcharge in the homes that we build. I actually can't think of any of my friends or family who have gas in their homes.

Laundry room vents:

We've been redoing our house over the years and found some intersting constuction shortcuts.

Exhaust fans in upstairs bathroom's (one no window) discharge into attic instead of thru the roof.>:( I'm wondering if the laundry room in florida had the same problem.

Siince we heat with wood we have a CO detector (audio and digatel) mounted on the wall. After this incident might try mounting the detector closer to the floor.

Carbon Monoxide detectors are mounted eye level because CO is a lighter than air gas. Putting it on the floor would mean that it doesn't go off until the entire volume of the room is filled with CO.

Talk to a security professional in your area. By God, I don't mean those idiots at ADT. Talk to a smaller, reliable company with reps who you can talk to more than once.

They can tell you more htan you might imagine aobut all sorts of sensors, wiring, and connections. Hell, when I was doing it I learned more about stereos than I even thought I didn't know. :P

My family bought a shirt for me when they heard I had a conditional job offer from a PD. I'm not going to put it on until the day I earn the badge, but I'll be drinking myself silly that night wearing it. :P
