Trent 0 #2 January 20, 2005 Thats pretty funny... just the kind of high quality reporting I expect from CNN. I think they write a lot of things without ever reading them themselves. Oh, hello again!
SkyDekker 1,465 #3 January 20, 2005 QuoteThats pretty funny... just the kind of high quality reporting I expect from CNN. I think they write a lot of things without ever reading them themselves. They were just reporting the outcome of a poll...no editorial comments, no conclusions, letting those reading the article decide for themselves. I think that is good reporting, I find it scary when they start drawing the conclusions for you and most people swallow it blindly. Hence, most of those who believe Iraq has WMD and was involved with 9/11 get their news from FOX.

Trent 0 #6 January 20, 2005 I guess you didn't catch the irony in the headline did you? Any way you look at it, it is pretty funny. QuoteI think that is good reporting, I find it scary when they start drawing the conclusions for you and most people swallow it blindly. Unrelated, but since you brought it up... So how about when they publish articles only showing one side of a story? Maybe they haven't drawn any conclusions in the article directly, but it definitely causes people to lean one direction simply because they're only getting what the outlet tells them.Oh, hello again! Maybe they haven't drawn any conclusions in the article directly, but it definitely causes people to lean one direction simply because they're only getting what the outlet tells them. I think that any person who relies on just one source of information to make up their minds and draws conclusions has a very high chance of being completely misinformed. Knowing a bit of the background and history of the media outlet provides a basis for understanding slants and editorial remarks.
Trent 0 #8 January 20, 2005 So, you agree that the headline and the content of the article/poll are at funny odds with each other? Or not? Opinions on CNN aside, it's funny and they might have done better with a different headline.Oh, hello again!

Opinions on CNN aside, it's funny and they might have done better with a different headline. Ohh I thought it was funny, even though it was exactly what the poll was trying to find out. Just don't see what it has to do with reporting quality.

spidermonky 0 #12 January 20, 2005 QuoteQuoteForget it, dude. You're right, the article was perfect. Why don't you tell me what specifically is wrong with the article? One thing I hate about these is the lack of information regarding the methods. All it says is it was a phone survey conducted over 3 days. I've gone to gallop's site in the past and found that CNN has quoted surveys that were conducted on less than 1000 people and only in ONE city! Sure they are 95% confident that the survey reflects the opinion of those polled, but it isn't an accurate representation of the readers of the poll results. Yeah I agree that very often polls are presented without the proper information. But I think that is a problem inherent to all media.
